oatmealface 0 Posted March 19, 2008 i wondered how you could rate originality in photos -- after all the billions of shots taken, how unusual is it to have an actual new photo? especially an aesthetically pleasing shot of an oil slick? i thought us environmental geeks were the only ones that took pictures of oil sheens... this has got to get top marks for originality, if there's any sense to the idea. what is the nature of the surface we're looking at? road-spray covered bubbles? umbris 0 Posted March 19, 2008 Thanks for your critique Dennis. Actually, this is a slab of ice. The colors are produced by illuminating it from the bottom through a polarizing filter. There is also a polarizing filter on the (100mm macro) lens, which creates this effect, called birefringence. The total dimension of the subject in this image is about 1.25" x 0.8" The bubbles are air bubbles in the ice. You can see more examples at my portfolio website Link to comment
