John, this looks great, the color is wonderful, the tones are equally impressive. It looks so delicate like the slightest wisp of air would send the petals scurrying about. Did you use any filters? or maybe a touch of softening in PS?

tulips are my favorite flower...but most often are photographed at

their "peak". as this one began to fade it presented a different but

valid beauty. hope you enjoy it...and please feel free to offer your

comments and suggestions! PLEASE VIEW LARGER VERSION.... thanks,

john

thanks guys! i shouldn't admit this, but i edited this one on my uncalibrated notebook...so the color you're seeing is probably much different than what I'm seeing. i won't be home until a bit later tonight, so until then, when i can put it on great ole big screen...with all the fancy calibration...i'm a bit in the dark and taking your word that it came off o.k. i appreciate all of you guys so much.

tim...to answer your question - a good deal of desaturation, slight contrast and white balance adjustment, and bit of diffuse glow...a touch of sharpening and that's it. :)

I too love tulips and roses as they have faded, and just before they fall apart, and are discarded. They are best on their very last day. perfect background color you chose. You have a good color eye.

Nice work, John. Lovely, gentle, and sensitive. Just like you:) lauren

Going floral on us are you? Actually I didn't have to look at it large although I did. While I think it's terrific I got some help on this one. My wife is a masterflorist so on your behalf I got an expert opinion. To tell you the truth she said it not only looked superb but you were wise to take it not on it's peak. So this one is officially validated!

John, the simple, graceful elegance of this image is awe-inspiring. The colours are soft, restrained and beautifully harmonious together. This is outstanding.

thanks to all who have commented! i can honestly say that i didn't expect the responses to be this positive!

to answer a couple of questions/comments...

Darius...i understand what you're saying. obviously this shot was more about projecting a particular visual mood than about sharp focus. perhaps ...repeat, perhaps what you're seeing and referring to... is a lack of separation of the gynoecium from other parts of the flower. in a larger print size...the separation is more apparent. i think you offer a valid point. good to hear from you...and keep posting in the Casual Conversation Forum!

Ton... you're liable to see me shoot anything but cats. i'm not opposed to shooting cats, but if i decide to do so it probably wouldn't be with a camera... ( that's a joke...well, mostly a joke)

Please pass on a special thanks to your wife for her contribution. you can't believe how timely her comments were...as i'm set to start talks with a couple of well known florist in the area on a calendar project. Having the stamp of approval from a master florist couldn't be anything but a plus!

Bulent... i hadn't thought of this photograph as being an abstraction until you commented, but you made me think. i don't know the technical definition of a photographic abstraction, but i think of it as photographing something out of the context of it's literal state...to a degree that it takes on a different perception, aside from it's literal state. i really don't consider this shot to be abstract because, although i've manipulated it to a point that it doesn't look exactly like the "real thing"...not only does it continue to look like a flower ... but it doesn't take my eye or mind to a place where I visualize anything more...than a picture of a flower. hope that makes sense! (?) thanks for making me think!
