Pete, nice to have you back and while I like this wold you be so kind to answer a serious question. I really would like to know why you sometimes put so much heavy filtering on photo's that don't need it in the first place and most of the time would be even better without it.

Thanks Oskar and Ton! Ton, I don't think I fully understand your question. Are you saying that this image is over-processed and you think the original would be even better? Maybe you could point out some other images so I can accurately answer. Unless I see something right from the camera that says "YES", I play with them a bit until I see or get what I want, not what I think others will like. Sometimes it is completely different than the original concept, other times it just needs some tweaking. This one looked pretty good without the addition of the accented edging but I wanted something with a little more punch. My eyes tell me when to stop...not a book or a technical standard. Thanks, Pete.

Pete it was just a question not a way to wind you up. What I meant is this. I've commented on more than one of your photo's as you know. It's your call always. I do think some of those photo's are good enough as they are without applying filtering, that's what I meant. Given that I just want to know why you sometimes choose to apply filtering. That's all.

Nearly forgot. You should ALWAYS do what you like rather than do what you think others will like. There is no difference of opinion here.

Ton, buddy.......I'm not wound up at all. Seriously. And now that I re-read my reply I can see why you thought so (and you're not the first to insinuate such 'winding up'...just ask my ex-wife!). I am waaaaaaay beyond any anger or disgust at another's comments or questions....especially if they have the courage to comment or ask. I appreciate all of your comments and critiques...100%!!!

As am I Pete. But you've still not answered my question. I can remember that portrait where you didn't crop that left eye. It was heavily filtered and i told you something similar. We all edit our photo's, sometimes more obvious than others. You sometimes seem to take it not just one step further but way beyond that while I suspect that the original one is good enough and could even be better without it (now I'm repeating myself, didn't mean to). We all experiment but when I see for instance those photo's from those girls (your daughters?) I sometimes wonder

Holy Cr@P, Ton! You're trying to get into my head! I will take a guess at my processing theory. I love art....maybe even moreso than photography (athough I think they are very similar). I would love to have the ability to take a photo and have it look like a piece of art rather than an incredible photo. Maybe it is more of an opinion or philosophy. I have seen some outrageously good photos on this site but very few that are truly unique or have the look of artwork more than an image. Does that answer it?

I guess. As you know I have a more classical approach which I think can be as artistic as well and although I know there are more ways than one and experiment occasionalyalso I always fall back on that. Am I trying to get inside your head? Maybe, but that's just curiosity. I only comment on photo's that interest me for one reason or another. So it seems only natural that if I can't deduct why someone does what he does to try to find out. At least your one to answer which is the other criterium for leaving a comment. But don't worry. If I think it's called for I'll make sure to bite your head off as I hope you will.
