cherlyn 1 Posted March 5, 2008 "Where in all the world is he to find scenery comparable to that which awaits the explorer and photographer in north-western Yunnan Province, China"So wrote Dr. Joseph E Rock in 1928, who was, at that time, the leader of the National Geographic Society's Expedition in Yunnan Province, China. Yading nature reserve is dominated by three peaks all reaching approximately 6,000 metres. The fifth Dalai Lama visited here in the 17th century and bestowed the honour that these three peaks, named Shennairi or Chenresig (Avalokitesvara, 6032 meters), Jambeyong(Manjusri, 5958 m), and Chanadorje (Vajrapani, 5958 m)by the local Tibetans, were the transformation of the Tibetan Buddhist trinity. These three mountains have never been climbed and their technical difficulty have so far defeated all those who have tried - primarily western climbers. They are sacred to Tibetan Buddhists for they are the representation of the compassion, wisdom, and energy/power that are essential to reaching enlightenment and the end of suffering. Buddhists believe that it would be a sacrilege to climb them and a kora or pilgrimage around one or all of the mountains brings great merit. The one I present here is Chanadorje, believed to be the manifestation of Vajrapani, one of the earliest bodhisattvas of Mahayana Buddhism. He is the protector and guide of the Buddha, and rose to symbolize the Buddha's power/energy. Vajrapani was used extensively in Buddhist iconography as one of of the three protective deities surrounding the Buddha. Each of them symbolizes one of the Buddha's virtues. Link to comment

jim craig 0 Posted March 10, 2008 Very well composed and captured image Cherlyn. DOF is good, the curve of the stream serves to deliver the viewer right to the main subject of the image, and there can be no doubt left as to what that is. Link to comment
