birteragland 1 Posted February 27, 2008 These are the hill tribes of northern Thailand bordering Burma. They are being kept virtual prisoners by their government. Many of the young ones have been given visas to resettle in Australia and New Zealand, but their government refuses to let them leave. They are far too important to their tourist industry. The slave trade is still alive and well. The younger girls are now revolting by removing their rings. jestrader 0 Posted February 27, 2008 stunning truth about this culture. Thank you for my newly learned knowledge. Its ashame that such a long time practice and part of their culture must be changed just for the revolt (even though it is the best thing they could do). Great shot though, I love the colors and the heavy vignetting. Link to comment

bertr 0 Posted February 28, 2008 I understand, however, that the removal of these rings brings serious medical problems. Their neck muscles have atrophied, the shoulder blades depressed, and thus they find it difficult to support their head...It's truly tragic...Bert Link to comment
