LenMarriott

Spotted on a recent field trip to one of my favourite haunts, Willow Creek. Canon A540, 'P' mode, Saturation +1, 1/640 @ f4, 11.8mm (72mm equiv) Handheld. Minor cropping & levels adjustments in PS. Best, LM.

Very well composed, the tree in classic thirds and the rootage as focal point in a square - excellent. And astonishing what a small sensor offers, impressive image quality. What I like especially is the kind of spiral form of the snow covered rootage.

Carsten, Your visits are always appreciated. I believe in cropping for the subject, not trying to fit the subject into some predetermined format. I also agree that the small sensor has a lot to offer. The great DOF, even wide open, inherent in these P&S cameras allows one to shoot unrestricted, handheld if you will, and still allow a high enough shutter speed to minimize camera motion. But their stength is also their weakness: it's very difficult to exercise artistic license in the use of shallow DOF as when one wants an out of focus background to isolate a subject. I've had no problems with the quality of my prints even with image sizes up to 12"x18". Haven't tried going larger. As for this pine tree which is perched on the edge of a steep enbankment, the exposed root system tells me the tree may not be vertical much longer, though it's stood like this for a number of years. Best, LM.

Spotted while on a recent field trip near Midhurst, On. Opinions on

how to make this a stronger image will be gratefully received. Best,

LM.
