When she saw I was taking pictures she did a couple of typical "cute" poses, so I asked her to just look at me instead. Window lighting. 18-70 lens at 70mm cropped from horizontal shot.

Jack, I think you're on to something. I tend to get the same "look" from both people and animals. Its not intentional exactly; my finger just hits the shutter whenever I get this "looking into the lens" by the subject, human or animal. Seems more "real" than an intentional pose (with humans). Animals, well, that's what they do until they get bored and look elsewhere. You have to be fast with animals.
