This is good old Elgol on the Isle of Skye, the first night I was

there in the summer. Fast winds, choppy waves, but as it got dark I

was down to 30sec exposures at ISO400 f11 with my 17-40 and a 5D. I

went and left the cable release in my other jacket. Very clever.

This doesnt look like Mordor. Please dont say it does!

WEll I'll give you that it doesn't look LIKE Mordor, it IS Mordor :D. Brilliant shot mate, though i wish there was more colour in the burnt highlights in the top LHS (may be blending 2 exps?).

M....... phew just stopped myself ;)

great shot - just the right amount of rocks leading into the shot, good surf and dramatic clouds echoeing the lines of the foreground strata - hope it was straight to the pub or the hot coffee after this for a warm up!!

Wonderful weather and conditions, but in all honesty I don't think it's up to your usual high standards - blown out highlights, lack of foreground sharpness due to the f/11 and a general unsettled arrangement - I feel my view pushed from bottom left to top right, where there's only darkness - I reckon the distant mountain is too central, and there's no interplay between it and the foreground. I'd have dropped lower and shifted slightly right. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad shot, quite the opposite considering the conditions, but it just doesn't match the rest of your work and isn't up there in terms of originality at this location (again, that's just part of shooting at this location).

Glad you kinda like it anyway, I just think its really ususual in the way the sky mimicks the rocks. As for f11, well I expalined I didnt have a cable release, but I dont think the lack of immediate foreground sharpness detracts from the enjoyment.

The whole rock structure is a steep downward ramp. The camera was as low as it would go, with the tide this high there is nothing you can do to lower the mountain into the image. I had to keep it central or you start to include the next mountain to the right and then it looks totally unbalanced. In otherwords there are many conditions and situations that you would not of been aware of that night that I had to take into account before pressing the shutter, but I can see what you say, but then space = magazine text so who knows eh? I personally prefer the other one in my portfolio that I shot three quaters of an hour before. Take a look at that and let me know what you think.

I was only there for one day so I reckon if I could stay there a little longer I may come up with something even better.

David,

Fair enough - I read you didn't have a cable release, must have been frustrating, though I guess the cloud/rock mimic would have been lost over a longer exp.! Conditions-wise, the steepness of the FG ramp is hard to gauge from the result, I was assuming that being right down low would have shown up more due to an increased lack of sharpness in the bottom of the frame. As for the sky mimicing the rocks, that's one of the disadvantages of having to scroll down to view the elements of an image, you never get to see the full thing! You're right though, text space is no bad thing. I love the other take you've got of the scene - for me that has much more in the middle ground to draw the eye from front to back, and the minimal localised blow-out around the sun gives a very "real" feel to it. Glad you didn't have just pure rain for the day you were there, I've heard of people waiting weeks here for a single patch of colour!

All the best,

James

David,

It's a nice contrast to the standard Elgol image, much darker (in more ways than one!) and more menacing altogether. I see what you mean about the similarity in the sky and FG, nice! Very powerful.

Hi David.

Love the complimentary lines in both foreground and sky.

Very beautiful...serene yet very dramatic and captivating!

Another great shot, David! I like the composition and small bit of brightness near the top. As always, you have your trademark foggy water and foreground rocks. You always do an excellent job of having great detail in your foreground rocks. I'm still trying to find some rocks so I can steal your ideas for compositions. Unfortunately all I can find is sandy beaches so I'll have to just enjoy your rocky foregrounds for now. Keep up the great work!
