This is a controlled over-exposure with studio lighting & the camera.

This effect was not created by PS. Thanks for looking :)

I think this is not controlled at all. This is too much overexposure. I am a big fan of this style but thats not nice in this way. Try again.

For that detailed explanation of "why" you didn't like this image. I checked out your portfolio & I didn't see where you had any examples of this type of image. After which, I found myself wondering if you had any idea how to set up & capture a "controlled over-exposure" such as this? So, until I see where you have perfected this type of image, I think if I were you I might keep my "likes" & "dislikes" confined to more constructive comments.

When I critique an image, I do not critique it on whether I "like" it or not. I look at:

1-Composition

2-Balance

3-Framing of the subject

4-Leading lines for my eyes to follow

5-Easily defined subject

6-Etc.

So, as I stated this is a "controlled over exposure". I controlled the lights & the camera. I did not use a dodge & burn technique in PS. The only thing I did was desaturate the image. Thank you again for your wonderfully constructive critique :) It was absolutely useless :)

I'm opposed to overexposing children. Actually, I think the less exposure children get, the happier it is in the adult world. Grandchildren are an exception, of course.

I on the other hand do find this style appealing. Would be very interested in hearing how you set this up Jayme.

I have experimented with PS in creating over exposures, I usually use a difuse glow type filter and then slide it up or down as I need to control the "glow".

Still haven't worked any more with layering to get those beautiful skin tones you achieve. Someday I am going to come to Bardstown and look you up!

John- You had me rolling on the floor with laughter :) LOL Good to hear from you again :)

Regina- I also am a fan of yours. John did visit me in KY & we had a wonderful dinner :) I'm not normally so testy, but I really enjoy constructive critique & I tire of the "I just don't like it" crowd :) LOL I prefer a little more information & a little less personal taste! Just ask John, I was very nice when he came to visit :)

John- I agree, the less exposure of children in public the better! :) LOL I'm old enough now I enjoy a quiet meal :) LOL I've earned it!

Regina- this technique is frustrating at first & sometimes almost elusive. But I have found that using 2 back-lights (aimed down from about 7.5 ft high in a crisscross pattern) to light the white background, that when metered together they are f/16. Then place the subject about 6 feet from that background & use 2 extra large soft-boxes at 45 degree angles to the subject. They are about 3.5-4 feet from the subject. I meter them, one at f/5.6 & the other at f/8. This is the starting point. I set the camera 1/125 f/8. I take some test shots. Mainly what I'm looking for on the camera monitor are the eyes & mouth. I usually don't have to adjust the back lights but I may adjust the 2 front lights up or down. Of course, I shoot it in the RAW format. Once I open the image in RAW, I then adjust the "brightness" & "shadow" & may even over-expose or under-expose it a little. I usually desaturate it in RAW. It's easier to adjust the brights & shadows once it's desaturated. So this is roughly how I do it :)

I have used only 3 lights & 2 large bookend type white reflectors or light panels. I used them in place of one of the front lights. It worked really well also. I always play with this anytime I am shooting someone on a white background. I just can't resist :) I hope this helps :)

A great big hug to you all :) I recently rediscovered (something very simple, that I knew when I was 5) that a "hug" crosses all the great divides. Religious, cultural, racial, political, generational gaps, etc. It can be a very healing experience! So..... I am giving each one of you a big hug in my mind & sending positive wishes to all of you! Right now the entire world needs a huge grandmotherly hug! And as a grandmother, we can hold on just a little longer than anyone else without people becoming suspicious of our motives. So, because I'm a Nana, 5 times over, I can get away with this! :)

I'm just a old, very free thinking Hippie (definitely not a Yuppie) & proud of it! LOL So, I hope you will hug someone today for me. Remember to spread those hugs around freely. We must heal this world! Remember when you were a small child & you needed a hug. For those of you who didn't get enough hugs as a child, I am holding you even tighter! Until all your tears go away!

I want all the Wars ended, I want all the world to live in peace. I want us to love each other a little more each day. It's time for a Revolution, a Revolution of "Hugs". Sound too good to be true? We can make it happen if we believe we can! It's time to get some faith in humanity back!

Continue Free Hugs in 2008 :) To those of you who know what I'm talking about, keep it up! For those of you who don't know what I am talking about, see this video: It's worth a million words! The start of the Revolution! :)

Well, first I want to say Hi, I've been away from PN for quite some time.

Technically this is well executed but blown highlights are still blown highlights. For my eye and visual appeal, I would prefer to have your highlights peak at 250 and not have several areas hit the wall at 255. Eyes, lips and hair are outstanding with possibly the lips being the highlight (so to speak) of the photo.

Also, I don't care for the circles you've placed on the cheeks from desaturating the original color version (use of Gamut warning to tone down areas), it's just left the gray areas on her cheeks.

I guess the blotchy areas (cheeks, chin, below the jaw line and neck) take away from so many technically great areas.

My current work can be seen at My Photos

Hope you and your hubby are doing well, Dave

Hi Jayme - I see you are always experimenting with new ideas. Without PS this is nicely done, I like it. I want to also thank you for being the first one in PN to notice my works and encouraging me to go further when I first posted.

It's been quite a long journey for us in PN. Without it and people like you I would not have been so passionate in photography. Once again, thank you..
