Dennis,

Great idea to use the screen lighting as your "special lighting"...I wouldn't have thought of that! It actually works well...much better than I would have thought it would. Who needs studio lighting! Hahahhaha! Great take on the theme, excellent execution. Your concentrated gaze is perfect. Well done. I honestly don't think I'd change a thing.

One thing Darren and I have discussed several times is the use of what you have available as a source of light. There are all sorts of light sources that will allow one to convey a mood. This a great example of that. Your pose and expression tell a story and the lighting accents it perfectly. I'll also have to say that there is just nothing that I would change about this.

Dennis this is stunning...The light is wonderful and very dramatic and suits the pose.

Maybe a little bit of light on the back of the head to bring it out from the background but that is picking...

I love the light how it is almost like you are about to cry but yet not a real cry but a cry like a man who has seen a lot in his lifetime and has a lot to share but won't ever really share it.

I love the soft light on the shoulders and shirt yet the ligter softness on the hand and the contrast to the sharpness on the graybeard. The darkness in the back is perfect for me.

You captured yourself just as I think of you.

You captured you as I would know you in an instant.

You captured part of your soul yet a part of you I will never get to know. That is something many can never do with self portraits. You did wonderful!

WOW!

Damn man!!! How on earth did you sit still that long?!?!?

A little more light on the back of the head would have been great, but really not all that big of a deal... The expression and the gaze holds the attention more than well enough to make this a superb portrait.

Anthony is right in saying that this is a really good example on how to make the most of available light...

Wow, great portrait. Very thoughtful and interesting pose.

Great lighting which emphasizes all the features on your face. It almost looks like it could be from a fire while camping.

The eyes reveal intelligence.

Excellent use of negative space.

Very good B&W conversion.

John, you said exactly what I'd been thinking...this looks like you are at a campfire and contemplating your next day's hike. I wonder how campfire light would have changed this any? The flickering would have made some difference, don't you think? I'm curious, now! :)

Sorry I'm late GB!! I like the throwback to Rodin. If this is a self portrait, they're hard to do but I find the focus just a tad off perfection.... But nice light treatment (bit blown out on the middle finger - maybe if you lifted that finger up into the air..... ) heheh great image - you have lots of character!

I don't know how some people do it - if somebody else takes the shot to be sure the focus is bang on, then is it really a self portrait??

I have taken thousands of them...

AND NONE of them I have flipped myself off in them (ha ha ha)

I am bound to get one of them sharp (ha ha ha) :)

sillly people.

btw one of my fav pictures of you!

I don't think it would work being sharp and personally in PS you could work on that white balance on that finger now that you have that 24" monitor. You will be surprised what you can do. ~ ha!

That is an easy dodge fix. :)
