billkantor 0 Posted February 10, 2008 Another lovely shot Dan. Composition and tonality are perfect IMO. Also like the vignetting effect. Cheers, Bill Link to comment
danbliss 0 Posted February 10, 2008 Thank you Gary and Bill. I appreciate your comments. Even though I like this shot, I was afraid that it would not really hook PN. People like really dramatic photos here, which is not a bad thing. Anyway, from the scores, it got a lukewarm response. It makes me wonder if there are better venues for feedback on our photos. Or, maybe I am just wrong about this one. I don't know. Just thinking out loud... In any case, thank you again. I really appreciate your comments. Dan Link to comment
billkantor 0 Posted February 10, 2008 Dan, I would largely ignore the ratings and focus more on the comments. True that there are some images that just won't go appreciated by the masses here on PN. So what? Ratings on this site don't seem to be a consistent metric (that's a euphemism for they are nearly meaningless). There are a lot of 3/3s without explanation. Anonymous high ratings are rare. I think people fear retribution for posting low ratings that can be traced to them. Just keep working on what you like. Listen to the comments and your inner voice. It's a very strong image. eugenio_pastor_benjumeda 0 Posted February 11, 2008 Hello Dan. Excellent landscape and great composition, with that wide sky over the far mountains. I have just seen your gallery again and it's really wonderful. I didn't found you to rate in anonimus. Regards from Eugenio. Link to comment
jim craig 0 Posted February 13, 2008 Great image Dan, really like the composition and what I'll call the 2/3 to 1/3 approach. The vignetting works well to direct the viewer into the center although I may have preferred it to be a little more subtle in the bottom corners. I'd have no difficulty hanging this on my wall, in fact I wish I'd taken it myself. (: regards, jim Link to comment
danbliss 0 Posted February 13, 2008 Thank you Jim for your kind words. I go back and forth on the vignetting. You are probably right, but when I was working on the photo, it somehow felt right. I don't know why. In any case, thank you very much for your comments. Dan Link to comment
garydad 0 Posted February 13, 2008 Hi Dan, In reference to your comments about ratings, please allow me to echo the comments of Bill. I find most ratings meaningless. Often I've had 7/7's mixed with 3/3's on the same photograph. People generally rate "on the fly"...a quick look, 2 clicks of the mouse and move on. Usually, if a person takes the time to actually write a comment, they have taken the time to look at-and study the photograph at hand. That time and study typically yields meaningful ideas. As for the vignetting, I like it; it adds character to the photograph and a directional aid to the viewer. I agree that it could be more subtle at the bottom but that is a personal choice and it works either way. Gary Link to comment
gerfoy3 0 Posted February 13, 2008 I really like this image. I love low compositions like this with a lot of sky. The burning works well IMO. Link to comment
gordonjb 10,860 Posted February 21, 2008 Huddled together in that empty field with their backs to the hills in the distance, they do indeed look isolated together. This is reminiscent of pioneer wagons out on the prairies, circled together for the night. I like the layered effect of the landscape. The big sky really adds to the lonely feel. The vignetting in conjunction with the light hitting the roofs focuses attention on what I am assuming are grain storage buildings. I'd love to see this one printed large. Very fine work Dan, up to your usual high standard. Link to comment
