yves_p 0 Posted February 6, 2008 Fantastic picture. Incredible colours. May be a little more focus on the path? (IMO). Cheers. Yves P. Link to comment

Guest Guest Posted February 6, 2008 Nice light coming up the canyon, to bad the FG tree lost most of it's leaves. I keep wanting to see more of the canyon walls where the reflective light is. Oh well, can't have everything. Great balance of light, exceptional Marc! Link to comment
yodo 0 Posted February 6, 2008 A wonderful picture!!! light, color, compo... I wish I can make just half of what you do, one day... Thank you for sharing with us your remarkable work... Link to comment
anish 0 Posted February 6, 2008 You've done a really good job of balancing the exposure throughout the image. Having been there, I'm guessing there must have been a difference of a few stops between the distant sunlit wall and the shaded area on the left? Did you have to combine exposures? If so, well conceived and very well executed. The composition is excellent - using the rule of thirds very effectively. Anish Link to comment
marcadamus 1 Posted February 6, 2008 Yes, Anish. I did have to blend two exposures to handle some highlights on the background wall and trees. Doing so helped me keep the best exposure to capture the glow of reflected light. Link to comment
anish 0 Posted February 6, 2008 Thanks, Marc. Do you use the HDR tool in CS3? I haven't tried it yet, but I'd like to learn. I've wanted to capture scenes like this, but never bother to pull out the camera knowing the highlights would get blown out. If you've found another method to be effective, I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks, Anish Link to comment
jake_mcguire 0 Posted February 6, 2008 Marc, Absolutely amazing shot! The composition is spectacular. The colors are insanely beautiful! I really like the foliage growing from the side of the cliff and the line it creates towards the background. It's too bad that the one tree on the left doesn't have more life to it. I bet this was a truly magical moment. I only wish I could see this sort of beauty (I will fairly soon, as I plan on doing a tour with you!). One question, what blending technique do you use? The only time I can blend two exposures and get a good result is when there is a horizon (pretty much like mimicking the effect of a GND). How do you do it? Thanks a lot! Jake EDIT: Just realized that Anish asked you pretty much the same question. Sorry about that. Link to comment
marcadamus 1 Posted February 6, 2008 No, I don't HDR anything. I use manual blends to correct small areas and only when I really have to. I know some out there who have certainly mastered results with Photomatrix though. But even then, one can expect to achieve perfect results only in certain situations. There are so many problems with HDR images I don't know where to begin. Especially when you have as discerning an eye as I do. Link to comment
images_in_light_north_west 0 Posted February 6, 2008 Nice shot Marc, great color. How do you like the 16-35 II compared to the 17-40 ? I am considering the switch myself. Ross Link to comment
marcadamus 1 Posted February 6, 2008 It's a noticeable improvement in very wide edge and corner sharpness IMO. Otherwise, very similar throughout the range. Link to comment
stuart_bellamy 0 Posted February 6, 2008 Beautiful photo! I love the colours complementing each other. I have always admired your work and your fellow photographers at timecatcher, I hope to be able to take photos like this one day. Very cool! Link to comment
sapsey 0 Posted February 7, 2008 I was hoping you would load another from this area. I spent ages looking at your last posts. One can image that once in side this canyon, you are in for the long hall. No easy exits I imagine. Just as a curious question. I know how much you love the US wilderness and I vaguely remember a previous comment of yours saying that you get what you need from these areas that spend so much time in. Though still being fairly young and plenty of career ahead of you is there a future intention of visiting other continents? Link to comment

juliusgrocholski 0 Posted February 7, 2008 The yellow tint in the center of the photo reminds me of pollen-covered clothing in the spring time. I bet you could not have done this with your old Canon EOS 1V . You're probably very happy to convert to digital. So are we, the average folk. Thanks for sharing. -jg p.s. Will you ever come to the eastern half of the US to explore and shoot? Link to comment
dacamera 0 Posted February 7, 2008 This is one of those tanatalising images that offer just enough of the promised land that it positively hurts not to be able to scramble into the sunlight and see what is around the corner! stunning and compulsive. Simon Link to comment
rajeevthomas 1 Posted February 8, 2008 Marc, this is an amazing shot....you have beautifully controlled light in this shot. Combining shots manuallly ...is there a way to learn that technique? Your new Canon 1D is capturing light and colors so well, or is this a 5D shot? Great job as always... I am a Colorado resident, this shot makes me want to wander in cayons...regards, Rajeev.
