Old Man Winter (Tree Carvings)

LenMarriott

Canon A540, 'P' Mode, Auto ISO, 1\200 @ f5.5, 23.2mm (140mm equiv), Handheld. Spotted on a recent field trip north of Barrie, On. Apparently, with most of the bark undamaged, these trees will continue to live & grow even with these faces carved into them. Best, LM.

Tony, Thanks for your thoughts. Whoever sculpted these faces must have stained them too. I don't think the wood is naturally this colour. They are only a half dozen steps off the road; easily seen & photographed. Best, LM.

I'm sitting here next to my window watching 65+mph winds blowing horizontal snow. And I'm thinking how cool it is when snow sticks itself only to one side of an object ... or sits in certain parts of something. I would certainly have done a double take if I saw these carvings. And I really like how the snow sits on each of them differently ... seems to be only on one side of the one of the left, but more like it drifted against certain parts of the one in the background. Cool!!

Lou Ann, Thanks for your interest. It's been a wild winter so far with rain, 4' of snow, a thaw, and then more blowing snow that stuck to these sculptures. Let you in on a little secret; I flipped the file horizontally so that the photo reads from Left (large) to right (small), just the way we read. At least I feel more comfortable viewing it that way. Speak up if you disagree. I always value your input. Best, LM.

NO! I totally agree!! You definitely made a great decision! As a teacher I have found in MANY situations that it helps to look at things from left to right the way we read. Nice choice!

I like the tree carving in the forest, like the wood came back to its origin in another form , with a human touch....;-)), and passing winter together with the forest... the face on the L really looks like peeping out of the frame... the smaller one looks jealous ( his eyes direction....). interesting color and carving, do you knowwho created them?

Flipped horizontally to put the larger figure on the left. Thought

it simply presented better. Your views\critiques gratefully

received. Best, LM.
