Can anyone elaborate on why they think this photo is so "average"? Am I too attached to it because it's my own image?

Thank you in advance for your time.

I can't speak for anybody else. My views:

Love the image, composition etc.

Dislike the vignetting technique. Doesn't seem like it helps this image, not that it's a bad technique across the board.

I love your work in general. My view is that this should be getting 6's or 7's because I really love the style, or at least 5's.

I'm going 6/6 in a close vote :)

Thank you for taking the time to give some feedback. I was actually second guessing the vignette myself, perhaps it's not needed or too heavy handed.

Thanks again for your kind words Donn, take care.

Todd, I was once a member of PPSCV (professional photographers, santa clara valley) and they are all about weddings/portraits and they LOVE vignetting, they want to do it on just about everything. They are wonderful people, I want to say that up front. But in that group, if you want to get a high score on a critique, you really need to use vignetting. And I think it has its place for many things, it's not by design a bad thing. But this is "better" than what I generally see for basic wedding and portait images. I think your work is different, better. The folks who give high marks for standard portraiture which "must" have vignetting treatment would NEVER come up with a composition like this. Never. So, not that I'm paying bills for you, but I think you should be proud of your creativity. And do what you think is right, not what other established groups may think is right. You have great instincts, keep it going!

Allow me to chime in. Todd, first let me say that I'm huge fan of your work. I even acknowledge you on my photo.net page as a source of inspiration. I like your use of vigneting on most of you images. It just adds that "look" I don't know how else to describe it. Just looks good. This one.....not so much. I see a reason to use vignetting to draw the eye towards the subject. In this case, the vignette draws my eye to the middle of the wall. Some other points are, she's not realy that sharp. Might be due to jpg compression that this site suffers from. The good points are, the white balance is perfect as with all your photos and it's quite unusual as with all your photos. Unusual in a good way.
