The lake was frozen completely over by mid December, and this is

what's left after five days of 40 to 50 degree temperatures and 6

inches of snow 2 days ago. It's generally April before the ice goes out.

It's also a first attempt at running a single Raw file through HDR.

Love your hdr work,it really adds to the colours. P.S._we haven't gotten squat for snow yet in central illinois!

Amazing composition. The lonely dog sitting is an eye catching element. The beautiful colors coupled with the serene atmosphere are irresistible.

Are you hinting at global warming?! Winter's raging outside my window right now, it's snowin' and blowin'. I think ol' Mother nature is just doing her thing with the climate. That pooch has a pretty nice perch for a great view. This doesn't really have that strong HDR look but the colors really pop.

Hi Doug, It's Tom, your fellow Ontarian photographer. Wow. Did you ever capture a beauty here! Obviously you hit the timing great with the lower light this time of year.. but what sort of post-processing did you do? It just "pops" so much!

a most wonderful image. May I make a small suggestion? I would crop the left side right up to the tree to the left of the dog. (leaving the tree in the picture of course)..that would remove the twigs in the left hand upper corner and, so I think, might improve the composition....greetings...Bert

Hey Doug... A beautiful winter scene. Amusing that with ice and snow it doesn't seem wintery enough. We get snow about every 10 years on average, but had a whopping 1/2 inch this past weekend (Montgomery, Alabama). Love the image, as is, and I think the lucky one here is the dog... what a view! Mike

Edit: Oops, I did hear from you this year... your comment on Jack the dog! Memory fails when you start getting old :-).

Being born and raised in Montana; I gotta tell you that I don't miss this stuff ('stuff' being a substitute for another word) at all. I am a dyed-in-the-wool desert rat, and plan on staying that way until...well, you know...I admire you tough guys living in this 'stuff,' it takes a lot more intestinal fortitude than I have. Having said all of this; this is a beautiful winter landscape; and the dog is GREAT! Damn Labs, they just love this 'stuff,' don't they? Come on out and go to Death Valley in mid-February with Ray Banfield and I...Come on, you can do it...Come on...Cheers! Chris

Peace unto you,Chris. We are all Gods here for three months or so .... well maybe not quite Gods, but we can walk on water :-) I have been considering buying a place in SW New Mexico, but at 74 I can't stay young forever and health coverage is more expensive than another home in the U.S. of A. :-) ...such a dilemma.

Thanks again for the invitation. Not sure I can get away that early but will keep you informed. Doug and Blue.

Exquisite, Doug. The dog on the cliff is perfect. I love the way it is framed with the trees. And I love looking at it and being able then to look out my window to all the green about me. (Although it has been in the 40's at night.) Thanks for sharing.
