A series of images. An interpration of a dance called "Alma"( an apple in the turkish language). My focused experience is the symbolic bible story of the forbidden apple, with some added connotations... To be continued....

Dancers: Shany Katzman, Yoave Grinberg. Choreography: Rachel Erdos

Thanks for your impressions.

Pnina, this is another wonderful image in your series of dancers, an image with soul (in Spanish "alma"). Beautiful tones and nicely framed.

pnina, A very fine shot with excellent tones. As usual you've captured something essential in this performance scene. Regards...

Destiny...

Together, man and woman; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be; contributing to hold each other and the apple up.

A striking image, Pnina, no one does the dance like you. You must be quite a dancer yourself, hopping around the stage to get all these shots.

They are finally on equal footing, but it looks dark, they look down, and the stage, I hadn't noticed before, has a primordial, liquid feel. A synchronization of caution as they study their reflections.

Must be hard to synchronize these movements while holding an apple under your chin. Both of them are on the same "page". A beautiful and effective capture.

I love the simultaneity of their bodies here. I can feel their gestures almost as one. The two apples on the ground mirror their bodies in tandem. This moves and captures the moment, but a moving moment. It is a nice addition to the series.

"Together, man and woman; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be."

The beginning, according to this myth, was actually man alone and as primary. Woman came second and from the rib of man. Luckily, we've begun to alter that way of thinking.

Teresa, for following the series and telling me the meaning in Spanish, interesting as when I have asked about the name they told me that it is an APPLE in the Turkish, and Spanish language....

Joe, thanks as well for following and commenting on this series, and your support in general, I appreciate it.

Kirk, nicely worded your comment , it started and will continue with both...

Jack, I'm not a dancer, even when I was a child I learned ballet... so my love to this world( as well as to the arts in general) is now created through my voice in photography...

Donna and Adan, It is a long dance with a lot of work on achieving a unison and synchronization of movement. I have chosen only a few images from what I have photographed, and worked on them to achieve MY commentary, and create the series as is represented here.

Fred, Please read my answer to Rachel here...

Thanks for your interesting addition to the series ! my pleasure. I read as well the Sartre article( link) and enjoy it, finding the language not too difficult...

I have uploaded the last image where I sum the series, and connect it to the line of my creation in painting, writing, and photography, all along my expression in the long path I'm atill walking in..

I figured I would get your attention by my comment above and receive a wet noodle slapping with a interesting response.

Now, what thinking are you thinking has begun to be altered?

Two rabbinical legends about Eve:

I attended a class where the rabbi translated the word as not "rib" but "side" as if Eve were made from literally the second half of Adam. As the term was translated, Eve's beginning was diminished. Pnina, what is the translation of the term?

Not only this, but there is a legend that Eve was not the first woman. There was a woman before her named "Lilith," who refused to do everything Adam ordered, so she was banished, and that's how we got Eve.

"Now, what thinking are you thinking has begun to be altered?"

1. The thinking that women are secondary has begun to be altered.

2. Wishful thinking, that alternatives to the man/woman relationship will begin to appear in our mythology and in our notions of what's romantic and eternal.

The tandem nature of the dance move leaves me with the impression that Eve is moving back into the side of Adam and the two are again becoming one. While the two dancers draw together the two apples of wisdom on the floor sit far apart.

Laurent, thanks for following and commenting, really appreciate it.

Kirk, what does it means: "wet nuddle slapping" ?it sound funny butI need explanation...

Donna, I did not understand what term you have reffered to, you mean diminished?. Please explain.

It is interesting that a rabbi will say( even as a legend) that was another woman first?what a "denial" of the script... LOL

Fred, I need an explanation of your answer to Kirk as well...

Gord, you came in time to add your nice! and funny comment...

btw, he still has an apple under his chin, what is this signifying ? ...LOL

I hope all is in a good spirit and sense of humor !

Pnina, wet noodle is pasta. So, the saying, I think, is like a mild punishment or scolding or correction, not harsh or blatant like getting slapped with a club or fist. It may have been a stretch using it where I did, but that's about what it means.

Fred, what you were thinking is what I thought you were referring to.

However, I never did think it meant the woman was lesser, which I believe is the common interpretation over the years. I always thought it was intended to mean that man needs woman, is not complete without woman, etc.

My view on that has been that you cannot fill that missing rib with people, male or female. I'm not even sure if its a void that should be filled; I think it is a void that drives us to discover and recognize the life around us, as long as there is love in that void; otherwise, you will fall in and be lost or gone to yourself and those closest to you.

Good point and thanks for the explanation.

Your final paragraph about the void is something I've never considered with regard to the Adam and Eve story and I love that take on it. I think it's great and it gives me a whole new outlook on the story. Thanks.

I still see the explanation that "man needs woman" or that "man is not complete without woman" as male-centric, which I think Genesis tends to be. If it's not about man over woman, then it's about what man needs. Neither comforts me.

As for any kind of wet noodle slap, it was just a piece of linguini, not a strip of lasagne or anything. It was as much a reaction to what I took to be romanticism or sentimentalism as it was to the specific nature of the gender roles portrayed in the bible (a book I do find to be obnoxious . . . so it's admittedly tough for me to be objective when seeing portrayals of its stories).

It's hard for me to think of the sweetness of everlasting man/woman love with the spectre of the horrific messages of the bible looming large over that image. Nothing wrong with eternal bliss of men and women coming together. But tying that to the bible misses the reality of the bible which condemns other behaviors and often relegates women to a lesser role.

Link to comment

I can understand women being relegated to a lesser role, what do you expect from a book written by 12 men!

That does bring to question though, the men that wrote the book admit to leaving their wives and children for another man or at least to follow another man, makes you wonder how they can legitimately condemn relationships other than the Adam'n'Eve? Afterall, those twelve guys spent a lot of alone time together unless they were partying and hitting the brothels and forgot to mention that in their story.

It's the Larry Craig syndrome of trying to clandestinely meet men in a restroom while you're in Congress pontificating about the evils of homosexuality. Hypocrisy can be such fun, especially when it's exposed.

I'm a completely secular person, I see the bible as you see it Fred, only as a cultural heritage among others, and here,it was a vehicle to creating what I wanted to express.

Interesting point Kirk, about the missing rib void, I have never thought about it as well, in this way.

Well Fred, bliss or not( and we know that in many cases not), men and women are fundamental for the human continuation...you were not born otherwise ...;-))

WOW, a real load today on my English and dictionary.....

. . . but consider that men and women may also be the ruination of humanity if they don't start accepting the impact overpopulation is having on this planet. Along with blessings sometimes comes a curse.

Fred, you have me laughing in tears! We had a local politician running for a local office that was exposed for trying some thing on an undercover agent in a restroom at a local mall. The guy has/had a wife and several children!

Poor Pnina, its still early yet, you will be taking aspirin by lunch time!

By the way, Pnina, your english if very good and I always understand your point of view; at least I think I do.

Fred, of course I know and aware of the over population of our glob, it is terrible ! I talked about it in general, the need of man and woman for continuation, not the global implications of it....

Kirk, thanks I'm glad, but it takes time to read and write, as I try to articulate my writing and responding, and expressing what I think...
