Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) form very big flocks with more than ten thousand birds. Here is the defence flight of them. You can see a bigger dot on lower-left side of the flock. It is a raptor and attacking the flock. This shape is the Starling's defence method.

Both this one and the "!" photo are amazing. I'm astounded at what nature sometimes presents to us. "f/8 and be there" indeed; well done!

When I lived in Oklahoma my wife and I would see this unique phenomenon. We would pull the car over and watch this unbelievable display of movement and shapes by the birds. I think they were swallows but I could be wrong. I am so glad you have captured this wonderful display by nature. Thank you very much for posting.

Wonderfully observed and photographed. You should enter this in the World Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
