I'm not familiar with nautical markers, but online it says that these are called daymarks. There are red triangles along the north side of the canal and green rectangles on the south. I love how they look planted on the pilings out on the still waters of the Canal in the morning.

Photographically, what are your thoughts?

'Day-markers,' or 'channel markers; they all serve the same purpose. They help boaters follow the rules of the road, so to speak. Red to the right. For example that marker marks the pilings and perhaps a shallow spot on the right side of the canal. Just as the yellow centerline and white line on the right side mark your side of the road/highway. When I was in the Coast Guard, I used to see people, and their boats, who had screwed up - not always pretty. Marker buoys serve the same function in larger bodies of water and the ocean. Cheers! Thanks, Chris - I guess that I thought that was the case. The only thing that doesn't make sense is that if you say keep the red markers to the right, then you can only move in one direction on the canal (which is not the case). Because both the red markers and the green are rather close to the shore ... if you keep the red on your right as you're going out, it will have to be on your left coming back in.....

Lou Ann, NICE CATCH! I love the starkness of it all! The Bold red against the snow and top it off with the red against the darkness. A wonderful balance! Great Photo! Regards, Doug
