bosshogg 4 Posted January 3, 2008 Ouch! Looks like he suffered a nasty skull fracture. I'll be perfectly honest, the frame you have created is as nice as the object in the center. I'm assuming that the original image was basically just that part that is obviously carved wood (?). I am really impressed with the treatment you have given it. Link to comment

jcpopper 0 Posted January 3, 2008 Thanks for noticing. The "skull fracture" you refer to is actually what gave me the idea for this image and treatment. Melville's Ahab had a particular scar, one of great import in the novel. As Ishmael noted, "It resembled that perpendicular seam sometimes made in the straight, lofty trunk of a great tree, when the upper lightning tearingly darts down it, and without wrenching a single twig, peels and grooves out the bark from top to bottom, ere running off into the soil, leaving the tree still greenly alive, but branded..." jcpopper 0 Posted January 3, 2008 Thanks for your comment. I have other less dramatic, more "dignified" studio studies of this object. But I decided to push the edge a bit -- just for the helluva it. Link to comment

gordonjb 10,860 Posted January 3, 2008 Everthing just fits perfectly with this. The pipe in his mouth, the Melville quote and the frame. I had forgotten that line and I am glad you posted it. I see several of those lightning scarred trees on my walks and will now how Melville's wonderful description in my mind when I pass them. Link to comment
jcpopper 0 Posted January 3, 2008 pnina, Katherine, Antonio, mehmet, Teresa, PhoS, Ioannis, Gordon -- Many thanks for your thoughtful, supportive comments. This "Ahab" was an experiment (obviously), and I'm pleased that you think it succeeded, at least to some extent. I'll soon post a more "serious" Ahab that pays more respectful attention to the real carving -- and to Melville's quote. Link to comment

robertinio 0 Posted January 4, 2008 Joe, I dont like frames, but in this case ..... In fact this frame is corresponding with the statue this much that it becomes more; a part of the picture. The very tasteful combination of colours and the strong combination of contrast between colours, modernism and corny antique made this photo become a picture. For me, a new side on you that I also like! Link to comment
ritachi 0 Posted January 4, 2008 I completely agree with Robert, very original composition and excellent use of elements. Regards. Link to comment
