I don't typically complain about the change in photos uploaded here ... but I have to say that this looked better on my computer before I uploaded it. :-(

Anyway ... I wasn't going to upload any more from the Niagara Falls shoot ... but I am drawn back to those shots over and over. So here you go. :-) I love shooting the Falls at night because you can just leave the shutter open to get that real soft look on the water. I love the levels of cascades about a third of the way from the left. With the red light it just looks so cool.

Now - tell me ... is the hot spot on the right tooooo hot? I played with it quite a bit in RAW but am not sure I'm happy with the results. Thoughts?

Happy 2008 everyone!!

Welcome to the world of JPEG compression, or whatever. You'll find that most of your images that look pretty good on your desktop after you've worked them up in PS, will be a bit 'off' when they're uploaded here. I don't what it is precisely, but surmise it is how an image is presented for web viewing. Sometimes it matters, and other times it is no big deal. I think your exposure is fine here. Personally, I've never understood why they (is it the US, or Canada?) shine colored lights on these falls, but whatever. I think it would be terrific to go there with a good moon and work with the natural light and see what could be done with some longer exposures. Happy New Year! Cheers! Chris

Hey, Chris - I guess that you aren't familiar with the rather obnoxious tourist feel to a visit that you make to Niagara Falls. EVERYTHING is touristy. These Falls are located IN the cities of Niagara Falls, NY and Niagara Falls, ON. As in, right IN the cities. There aren't really parks or hikes or anything else right there ... but a lot of high rise buildings and bright lights and absolutely no natural lighting whatsoever. It's kind of like Las Vegas (no joke!) The colored lights are done specifically for the holidays. The lights have to come from Canada because the U.S. side of he gorge doesn't have a good angle on them. I think you would have had to arrive about 150 years ago to work with natural lighting there. Sorry. :-)

Thanks for sharing that attached photograph! That was very cool. You know, it is very odd that in all of my gallivanting around I've never, ever been to Niagara. Hmmm, I surmise that I shall have to remedy that; although with your 'Disneyland' description it has taken the starch out of the appeal a bit. When I get done with NY wine touring, I'll swing by. LOL! Have a wonderful day (did you go to the outdoor hockey game at RW stadium yesterday?) Cheers! Chris

Hey, Chris - no, I didn't go to the game, as the tickets were nearly impossible to put your hands on. It was the local controversy that the tickets were (1) extremely expensive and (2) amazingly unavailable. It's an 80,000 seat stadium, so it's amazing that they sold out so quickly ... especially in a town where most people don't have that sort of money in their pockets. But it was fun to follow in the news every day. It's nice to live somewhere where the local news and the national news are distinguishable! (Unlike in DC!) Chris - if you're looking for nature ... you won't find it in Niagara Falls.

Nice colours on the falls. I suppose there are spotlights on it ? This and the photo you have inserted just above are breaking my dreams about them. I was always imagining that they were in the pure wilderness of the old times, when only Indian people were living there.

Henri, don't pack your bags for a trip to Niagara. You'll be mighty disappointed. It's no such thing as wilderness anymore. It is tackier and more touristy than anything you could possibly imagine. I'm so sorry to let you down.

Take a look at this image in Flickr (NOT my photo). It shows the origin of the floodlights. They change colors at intervals (probably 10 or 20 minutes between changes, I would say).
