A series of images. An interpration of a dance called "Alma"( an apple in the turkish language). My focused experience is of the symbolic bible story of the forbidden apple, with some added connotations...

Dancers: Shany Katzman, Yoave Grinberg. Choreography: Rachel Erdos

Thanks for your impressions.

Wonderful image. I think the light and the tone are the most special aspects of the image. Of course the pose is dramatic and intriguing too, but I'm really impressed with the tonality.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Of course, it's well done -- If it's an Evental that goes without saying.

The darkness, in spite of the title, gives it a somber feeling (for me). The muscular form is beautiful. Most dancers are so lovely they're a thing of beauty just by being. (That may not make sense, but I'm giving a phenomenological type response here.)

The balls....fruit? yoyos? I'm not sure what they say to me. The circling of the form seems to be marking off the woman as if to say "This is what you pay attention to. Look at this woman." That can either be wanted or unwanted, so that element in itself is neutral.

The position of the upper arm has life in it, so we can clearly see this is a woman who is alive. But the arm seems to also have poised potential motion (again, I know that may not make sense)so it does not say to me that she is sleeping.

I could see this image as speaking either peace and "innocence" as the title suggests, or something darker, less light-hearted. The lighting seems to be slyly exposing her, drawing attention without acknowledging it.

I see elements of beauty with a sinister undertone. And perhaps that what this image is saying: Here is innocence, but it won't last. Innocence will be lost so note it's beauty while it's here.

A thought-provoking image, Pnina. I'm glad I saw it.

Just a note: I tend to critique before reading the photographer's statement so my impression will be from the visual only. I just read Pnina's explanation and I think I got it!

Thanks for your extensive interpretation.

First all is Evental... ;-)) as the name is completely different( "Alma" )( apple in the Turkish language), but for me seeing the dance for the first time the bible story of "The garden of Eden" was unfolding befor me so strongly, that I did not even found out why the real name was given to it.....( found it later)

The second thing is that it is the male dancer in the couple performing the dance, and I will upload a photo of him taken in rehearsal, so you can see him in light. Maybe if you would have observed the figure as a man's figure, your read could be different. For my imagination it represented two lines of thoughts: the mental darkness of Adam, not knowing that he is naked, so innocent of the knowledge, also the story is that Gode put him to sleep and than created the woman from his rib.... it is a series of MY interpretation of the dance, not necessarily the choreographer's one( and it is my interpretation in all my dance images.)

I liked your sentence of the fast disappearing of innocence, which fits the story very well, as you probably know...

Does my explanation change your interpretation?

I wrote Evental, didn't I? (Yes, I'm evil...I edited it!)

Why did I see him as a woman? He so clearly is male. Where is Dr. Freud when you need him? No, no need for Sigmund on this one. I believe we tend to see things from our own perspective. I was so taken by the composition that I never stepped out of the "me." I try to tie in other's feelings and experiences with my own, to put myself in the other person's shoes, and I think this time I did that.

I think my interpretation is very consistent with what you are trying to portray. This is a very successful photo, Pnina. Very well done.

Jim, Jeff, David and Joe, for your nice feedback, and liking the color tone and light ,which I think is important in the story.( explanation given to Rachel).

I feel a tension in the repose-something is going to come out of the darkness. He is surrounded by the fruit. Is it the tension of a discovery not yet made? A very moving photograph, with beautiful lines and tones.

I wonder why it "was you"in the first place and why it is still consistent( even your innocent explanation fits), can you explain it( you don't have to of course).

Anyway it is only the begining of the series, I will upload more...

Steven, thanks, yes it is, please read my explanation to Rachel, about the darkness and innocence of not knowing.

I think we tend to see others from our own frame of reference. I don't think I can say it any differently than I did...when I relate to other people I try to put myself in their shoes, in that situation, so as to better understand it/them. Sometimes I lose myself in them as I did in this case.

A deeper meaning analysis might be that perhaps I'm mourning a loss of innocence, longing to return to a time more consistent with my own tendency for a Pollyanna-type outlook (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollyanna).

He sleeps like a baby Pnina and that to me is a glimpse of innocence. His vulnerability is evident. Funny how he uses the apples to rest his head.

What I feel looking at your beautiful work is dancer esablishing the relation with the audience that we are aware of but that we can not see...Best regards, vf

Poor man, look what happens when man succombs to Eve's temptations; the life is sucked out of him and he dies! Just kidding.

Great position and DOF with the apples fading off into the background and the light and shadow is like that of a still life.

Thanks all of you!

Kirk, nice to see you here. I know, the women are always to blame.... but read what I wrote to Jeff

Ahhh, but that's only so we can provide for our beautiful damsels or maybe its just revenge for being tricked by the woman and cast out of Eden!!

(I don't believe that although some may. I just thought it would be funny.)
