shots worth sharing 1 Posted January 1, 2008 A beautiful subject and the framing is an interesting idea but for me the dirt at the bottom is jarringly incongruous. In addition to its starkly mundane composition, there's a distracting ambiguity about the scale of the dirt wall--is it 3" or 6' high? Also, although earth, it seems nonetheless unnatural (and unstable) in form, as if cut by a spade or backhoe. It would compete less for attention with the structure if it were darker and less sharply focused, like the top and sides. I can imagine, of course, that that perspective and composition may simply have been required, or at least offered, by the lay of the land but I can also imagine that the tension between the structure and its context was to some degree quite intentional. In either case, the viewer is required to reconcile the sharp contrast between the meticulous and exuberant artistry of the building and the chaos of dirt which appears, from this perspective, to be swallowing it. My response to that challenge is to view this image in the context of the tenuous state of Tibetan culture (and, indeed, traditional cultures around the world) at one level and the ephemeral nature of the works of man (perhaps best expressed by Tibetan sand-paintings) on another. katzpjs 50 Posted January 1, 2008 I often attempt this type of natural framing of my subjects so I know how difficult and challenging it can be. It appears that you've done about as best that can be hoped for with your endeavors but I feel that it falls a bit short of the quality you always strive for with your images. Happy shooting in 2008 and as always, I'll be watching. Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted January 3, 2008 Interesting framing ... are they digging around there or something? It's a beautiful building. I love the golds against the bright blue sky! Link to comment
godfather 0 Posted January 3, 2008 Could also say "FUN" framing. The colourful monastery pops out nicely out of the frames. Well done.Best regards Tero Link to comment
