Okay, so I guess that I must be some kind of anti-social or something if I spent my Friday evening building a lightbox while watching my recording of the Kennedy Center Honors. Haha!! :-)

Anyway - I DID build a lightbox, and am now attempting to teach myself about lighting. I want ANY and ALL suggestions or help that you can possible send my way!

For example, what the heck is that magenta cast? I used the white background in the box, shot in RAW, worked with the white balance, and this is what happened. Eek! And again with the shadows. Why are there shadows? Help!!

Thank you!!

By the way - I really like this in B&W, but wanted more commentary on this in a way that was closer to how it was shot. Anyway - here's the B&W for comparison. (Yes, my sensors need cleaning!)

I like the color image. I like the shadows, they work well. The DOF is fine. It looks like the lighting is really good. I like the catch-lights on the lip of the bottle.

I have a white tent portable studio and I get the magenta cast, too. The other colors come out properly, but the white is pink. I'm not sure why. I'm very new to lighting, as well. You've kept the details on the bottle very well and nothing is blown out, so that's good. I have trouble with unappealing shadows sometimes, but looks like that's minimal here. It's nice experimenting with digital because you can try different settings and immediately get feedback as to how it works (or doesn't). That's the best way, I think. Try different angles with your lighting and different f-stops and take lots of notes! Have fun!

Kim - thanks SO much for the input. I have to say that I really dislike the magenta cast. I'll have to play with it. This is a fun new project for me ... living in Western New York, safe to say that over the next few months I will have few opportunities for outdoor photography. :-)

I am brand new to studio lighting ... built myself a very small

lightbox and am working on lighting and other techniques. This is one

of the first few images. Please help! Thanks so much!!

I think this is the most successful of your light box experiments. How clever of you to build a box. Do you have a project you are working towards? Good luck and have fun!

Yes, Linda ... well, maybe not a "project" per se ... but more of a learning curve that I want to take on. I do SO MUCH outdoor photography. And the only flash I even own is the on-camera one ... I couldn't begin to imagine what I'd do with a hand-held flash. LOL! So I find myself in the winter in Buffalo and wanting to learn to do some photography that might earn me some $$ ... and decided to start small. I'm just going to take household stuff and shoot it in the box until I'm satisfied with the results. Take a look at my blog (http://www.louannsplace.com) ... I have a link to a page I posted about the process I used to build the box. It was quite fun!
