This is a really well-conceived shot. It is both portrait and statement. There is a certain peacefulness in his attitude and posture that echos the sentiments behind what he's reading. There's also a certain irony in that generations have aged waiting for such a peace. You've captured several meanings of the word "peace," all of which would be well for all of us to remember at all times.

Thanks, Rita! I decided to acquire the Pentax 77mm Limited lens for holiday shooting and regard this shot as vindication.

 

I'm a little concerned about the color--specifically, the magenta & green 'staining' on the pants and would appreciate any advice anyone might offer on how to correct that. The lighting is a complex mix of daylight from behind, tungsten over head and (possibly) florescent in front. I should add that the color of the shirt is much greener that in 'real life' where it is more brown.

Do you use photoshop? Other post-processing software progams may have similar capabilities.

 

Two approaches:

 

1. Go into Color Balance and try some different adjustments (you can adjust selectively for highlights, midtones, and shadows) moving away from magenta. If you use your history brush, you can then just swipe the pants with it. You can then rebalance away from green and swipe the shirt.

 

2. Go into Selective Color, and take magenta out of your reds and a hair out of your neutrals.

 

Since no one knew the color of the shirt, the more important thing to do if you have to work on the image globally is get rid of the magenta cast on the pants, but then you may add a bit to the green of the pants, so working selectively would be key here.

 

If you don't do much post work, best advice is to adjust your camera's white balance in the future. It sounds complicated, but it's really not. Just google white balance adjusment or some such thing and I'm sure you'll find the easiest methods, usually requiring taking a quick shot in the lighting your working under of a white index card and having your camera adjust itself according to the readings it gets.

Wow--ask questions, get expert answers! I use PS Elements and hope it has the functionality you describe. Color management and the development of my pp skills will be high priorities for me over the next several months so your guidance is greatly appreciated!

Good gravy, the composition is wonderful. The man, with his wizened and wise face, sitting in the sunlight that reflects beautifully off the skin patches peeking through his hair, reading a book that addresses something we (most of us) pray and hope for.

 

I love it.

I love this photograph. I love the lines in the hands, the light through his ear and hair, and the concentration and attention of the eyes. It looks restful.
