AJHingel 127 Posted December 24, 2007 Critiques are very welcome. I learn from it. Merry Christmas to all of you !! Link to comment
adan1 0 Posted December 24, 2007 What a lovely shot Anders. It feels so serene and contemplative. The tree is majestically captured and the person walking (is that you?) adds an intimate touch to this scene. Link to comment
AJHingel 127 Posted December 25, 2007 Thanks Adan " serene and contemplative" are the correct terms for what I see in the scene and what I meant when shooting it so in some way the guy on the photo is me. However, I shot it ! Link to comment

AJHingel 127 Posted December 27, 2007 Thanks Pierre, good to see you back. I'll try out the framing suggestion of yours. "Why critics only ?" - I'll tell you. I discovered that I mostly did not agree with either the 3/3s or the 7/7s I received, so I stopped asking for them and stopped at the same moment the ratings of others. The problem with ratings is that you might disagree with them, but they tend to influence you and you start trying to satisfy viewers with another approach to photography, that does not necessarily fit with your own inner self !!! I see at least three rating rationales going on: - Rating from a number of professional photographers that rate according to supposed market value of a photo (and therefore irrelevant for me because my photos will not be for sale); - Ratings from viewers using a variety of aesthetic/compositional/novelty/technical criteria but who do not explain them and therefore un-understandable for others - including for me; - Ratings from people sapping between photos on Photonet like they do with television images as if photos were for entertainment only; - Ratings from members of Photonet who I admire for what they do as photographers and for what they express in comments. The latter group is an extreme minority of ratings and would be the only reason I can find for restarting asking for ratings. Complicated, I know, but the result is that I do not participate in the most popular game here on Photonet, but appreciate highly the rest. An alternative to flat rating would be that ratings were promoted as part of any comment - different from promoting comments as complements to ratings, which experience here shows does not work. At that moment ratings would at least be understandable and permit you to agree or disagree and thereby learn from it. Until such changes happen, I will not rate and will stick to "critics only". Happy New Year to you. Looking forward for exchanging photos of a new fertile year of photography Anders Link to comment
aginbyte 0 Posted February 14, 2008 ... the gradations in the sky are perfect, the nearly flat horizon broken by the giant tree. I debated on this, but actually think that the man is a good touch. My reason? The long long shadow that he sends into the center of the frame. Well done. Link to comment
AJHingel 127 Posted February 14, 2008 Dennis this very well seen. In my view also, without the shadow the man has not business walking into the frame and the whole setup would have been much less attractive and would just be a banal portrait of a tree. The shadow does it all Link to comment
