Those are dish towels. I have this habit, while doing dishes, of taking a break to check e-mail & pnet. I'll dry my hands en route and usually forget to take the towel back to the kitchen to resume the chore.

 

The yellow and the sun are intentional: the room faces east and the window faces a covered porch so it never gets any sunlight. In winter, I really have crank up the (florescent) lighting to fight the gloom.

 

I just finished giving the space a good tidying and cleaning in preparation for the holiday onslaught so it looks somewhat better than in the picture now.
