Wayne: Thanks. That was dumb luck, actually. The bird was standing right at the edge of some shadows, and just getting his head out into the light. I was in a bright puddle of full sun, perhaps a meter from him. That scene you're seeing reflected in the eye is the sky over the lake, a bit of beach, and the sillhouette of me crouching down for the shot.

You know, say what you will about the 18-200VR lens being consumerish and touristy (which is exactly how and why I was using it that day), but it's not too shabby when you have some light to work with. The VR really helps in handheld situations like this.
