Bill, this is a nice shot! By looking at your portfolio it's apparent that you DO know a good shot when you see one...so I apologize for the idiots, who after 6 ratings...have given you a sub-4 average for aesthetics. I'd bet good money that if you could take a look at their portfolios (if they have one...or if they're even photographers)...you'd find work that doesn't measure up to yours. If it did... then you would know that the marks were given out of jealousy.

End of rant...I feel much better now! Seriously, I just hate to see someone produce solid work and not receive due credit.

To the photo. I experiment with croppings/composition/framing that borders simply being odd...so I applaud your use of the square crop. However, in this case it doesn't work for me. The dark area upper right does act to balance the hawk and his perch that begins lower left...but I still find the dark area distracting. As well, there seems to be a little too much negative space, resulting from the square crop. Yet, even though it might not be my first choice...I keep looking at it over and over...and the more I look, the more I appreciate it just as is. Of course it's just an opinion...nothing more. no firm, fast rules as far as I'm concerned. I'm sending the crop I'd use...and though I like it in one sense...I keep thinking...it looks so "standard"/generic that perhaps its bores me....

Thats one good looking bird. I like the background even if it doesn't look realistic. I also would crop it tighter on the right. All and all, really well done. As for the morons that give undeserved 3 ratings, they should be banned.

Nice shot. Anyway the contourns of the bird and the branch looks strange to me, like it's is a montage, or you selectively blurred the background using a bad selection. But, probably, it's the web compression that caused this.

Bye
