Nikon D80, 18-20mm VR lens hand held. ISO 250, shutter 1/20th f/18. The sharpness here is amazing to me for a hand held shot. The camera was set on extra vivid. The image is largely unmanipulated, but the saturation is bumped up a bit in Photoshop. The image size was reduced for uploading.

Nice scenic photo with good colors and saturation. In a water photo such as this, make sure the water is level and not flowing uphill or downhill (unless you have a geyser or a waterfall). It's the first thing a critic or judge looks for. If it appears unlevel, either your score goes down or you get an immediate rejection. Water on the distant horizon is always level, but on streams and lakes it may deceive you if shorelines are irregular and close in. Use the monitor edges as a guide to tell when something is or is not horizontal or vertical. Move the framed image box so that the water touches the monitor (or outside box) edge. If they are not parallel, the water isn't level (or the trees, buildings, etc., are not vertical). When that doesn't work, I use tree trunks or building edges, but they are not always useful, as in your photo. In the left half of the image the trees lean left, but they are vertical in the right half. Just find the right "key" and make your corrections. It is easy and will pay dividends. (See attachment)

Firstly a thanks to Lamar since we don't often see these types of comprehensive comments.

My 2nd thanks is to Larry for a beautiful image. The ducks are nicely positioned to the left , I like how the band of leaves at the top are nicely balanced with the band of water leaves. The section of blue water is dessert.  Well done.

Tony,   I fully agree with you.  Lamar's comment was one of the first I ever received of PN.  I took this image right after I got my first DSLR and did not know about straightening the horizon lines.  Wow, his comment was so helpful! It's a joy to have you looking back on my image and complimenting it as well.

It seems that we have had less Canada Geese around in the last couple of years.  Maybe they get better health care in Canada.   I noted your comment about loons related to that nice pastel image of yours with the reeds in front.  The eerie call of the loon is an experience we had in the Minnesota Boundary Waters Canoe Area over 30 years ago.  One doesn't forget this experience.

Thanks for your comment.  Larry
