Guest Guest Posted November 21, 2007 Really good portrait. Great human expression. Wonderful eyes, alive and beautifully lit. Sweet mouth in a pensive mood. Good fade to black which really complements his beard. Nice job of focusing. Love the softness on the left side of his face. Seems pointedly oversharpened, which makes it have a very unreal feel. Were you after a certain effect here? There may have been other methods to try. I could see wanting a little extra sharpening for texture on the beard, but I think you carried it pretty far. Note the pores. They don't look like exaggerated pores (which can be an interesting effect sometimes), they look more like pin pricks. On a personal and emotional level, despite these technical comments, this is a portrait that connects, speaks, and feels genuine. There's an awful lot just in the expression and in your ability to capture that. Link to comment
gerfoy3 0 Posted November 21, 2007 Ah fred, I was hoping you'd see this one...Yea the very strong sharpening is something I wanted out of this one. I spend a lot of time hiding pores and the like when shooting women or men. But this one was post processed for me. I wanted the details on the skin to stick out. I'll make the focus a bit more selective and post another version and you can see what you think if you drop by.. Ger.. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted November 21, 2007 For what you're after, I'd consider more level adjustments in areas on the face and some dodging and burning to bring out details, lines, pores, etc. The sharpening tool really has a very unnatural and digitized feel to it. Link to comment
jan_piller 0 Posted November 22, 2007 All the technical aside, I agree - it's a portrait that really connects with the viewer - great eye contact. Link to comment
joe-tury 0 Posted November 25, 2007 Great b/w tones!! You've managed a good character shot. The over sharpening works for me, but I can see how it would bother some. Link to comment
mvisionphotography 1 Posted November 26, 2007 I say go over the top a bit more and then you have almost a 3D affect like the movie 300 and then he has turned into more than just a portrait. THAT is what the over sharpening affect has done. I can't wait to see what the softer version of him looks like. Link to comment
jeffl7 0 Posted November 27, 2007 My first impression was how great and dramatic the lighting is. The eyes really connect with the viewer. I don't mind the sharpened skin/beard, which adds a lot of "emotional" texture. Extremely effective portrait. Link to comment
