Morning Light on the Dolomites

Matt Laur

ISO 250, 130mm, f/11, 1/350. Seat-of-the-pants white balance adjustment - airline windows and high altitude light are funny, that way.

Not far from the Veneto Plain and headed for Verona, this is a

morning scene overlooking the Dolomites from about 20,000 feet. Thank

you Air Dolomites, for a very nice cup of in-fligh capuccino. And

thank you for looking, and for comments.

The image should be very good, but it's way too soft on the upper part. i don't know if it's due to the aircraft's windows or what, but it's very bad for me.

Otherwise very good...

Thanks, Mauro. Actually, that's just morning atmosphere in the way. That's actually what it looked like from up there that morning. Of course, since you're seeing it (correctly!) without that context, I know what you mean.

I've done a lot of backpacking throught the Dolomites (the Alta Via 2 or High route 2) so this is a shot I couldn't get on foot! But yes, it is soft/bright at the top and too dark at the bottom.

What you need is a split neutral density filter (color grad) filter, that has shading on one half and clear on the other (most filters will also get rid of the high elevation haze you see in the photo as well). This will allow you to better blend the bright sky with the darker foreground and make the light more even throughout the photo. You could also use a polarizing filter to bring out the clouds in the sky as well. Once you learn how to use these filters, your photos will improve dramatically. Otherwise, a very cool shot. The light in the middle is great.
