alberta_pizzolato 21 Posted November 18, 2007 Love it, Dave. Reminds me of the movie "Brazil" with values and pipes everywhere. So much to look at. Now for a little critique: if this were my photo I would desaturate only the yellow a bit and bump up the contrast. I know, then it wouldn't be your photo. But I had to play. Food for thought and discussion attached. Terrific and original as is! Cheers - Link to comment
shots worth sharing 1 Posted November 18, 2007 Oh, cool--I like it! The yellow is actually the true color (except maybe deepened a bit when I bumped up the contrast.) If I interpret you (and your version) correctly, it seems you desaturated selectively, toning down the yellow only (but left the yellow tag, you fox!) Its that right and, if so, how? (I don't need a step-by step but what software and what's the name of the function &/or control?) Oh and thanks for noticing and commenting. Link to comment
stp 6 Posted November 18, 2007 Dave, I like the yellowish tone in your original, but I'd like to see that yellow tag toned way down (desaturated, perhaps) so that it doesn't stand so far apart from the rest of the image. The older signs are great, and the shadows work very well. Link to comment
shots worth sharing 1 Posted November 18, 2007 Thanks for your take, Stephen. Toning down the yellow is within my capabilities. BTW, I know you'll agree that I totally lucked out on the available light in the warehouse. Link to comment
alberta_pizzolato 21 Posted November 18, 2007 I used PhotoShop's Image/Adjust/Hue-Saturation tool and selected "Yellow" from that drop-down menu (Master is the default). There's a slider to desaturate and I pushed it to -55. Then I used Image/Adjust/Replace Color and using the eyedropper, selected the medium-light level color on one of the wheels and lightened. That made the wheels stand out a bit more. I finished off with Image/Adjust/Exposure and set the Offset to -0.0050 which bumped up the contrast just a bit. I didn't do anything to get the ticket to retain it's yellowness. I just wanted to be yellow. Hope you'll have fun playing with this one some more and then sharing. It's a great shot! Jack McRitchie 150 Posted November 20, 2007 Very nicely seen and executed. You have tamed the machinery as a lion tamer controls his lions. Link to comment
celasun 0 Posted December 6, 2007 A beautiful, nicely balanced composition full of details. It kept me looking at for quite a long time! I suspect it might have been less effective without the yellow tag... Link to comment
shots worth sharing 1 Posted December 6, 2007 I think you're quite right. The bright yellow tag plays off the pale monochrome background like a soloist and chorus. Without it, I'd probably have gone to B&W. Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted April 24, 2008 With all this talk about the yellow tag, here is what I would have done: Stepped forward, removed the tag, stepped back and taken 5 to 10 photographs of different versions of the scene and then replaced the tag before moving on to another part of the warehouse. All in all it is a fun image! Link to comment
shots worth sharing 1 Posted April 24, 2008 Oh I don't know--the tag gives it a bit of color ;>) Link to comment
