A strobe-lit scene in a dark winery's grape drying room. These wooden

trays were once used to harvest from silk worms, and now dry grapes

to produce one of the Veneto area's greatest treasures, Amarone wine.

Thanks, Dennis. We had the rare opportunity to taste our way through a flight of Bertani's Amarone from 1967, 1977, 1981, 1986, and 1990 during a dinner in the estate's historic villa following a tour of the facility. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to be sure.

... once in a lifetime. I used to have these wines going back to 1974, but they are long gone (the last drunk in the mid-90's. For some reason, in the very early 80's, nobody was buying amarone, barolo, barbaresco, or any of the great Italian wines. Was already buying French wines (the dollar was equal to 10 francs, or twice the normal rate) and then found these wines. Stocked up on cases! How I regret not saving just a few more bottles (maybe a half dozen left!). Thanks for the details, Matt. Congrats on the shot and the dinner!

Amarone is my favourite style of wine. I am so very jealous of you now.

P.S. Lovely image! The contrast between the colour of the grape skins and the rich red of the wood is simply lovely.
