A church was first mentioned in 1264. In 1333 it is mentioned by thedean of the pope as parish. The church was built as appraisal to AllSaints. In 1545 Károlyi Mihály gives the church toprotestants. After his return to the catholic church, he tries withoutsuccess to become it back. Only in 1723 makes KárolySándor a proposal to the protestants: if they give him back thechurch of his predecesors, they become as recompense a new church, aparish house, a school, and a house for teachers. It happened so. Thegiven back All Saints church was rebuilt, blessed in the middle of abig feast and the count left it to the Franciscans from Kaplan to lookafter, until the Piarists settled to Carei in 1727.

On the 5th of October 1768 the count Károlyi Antal becomesafter 10 years wedding a son. In that year, Saint Joseph fromKalazanc, the founder of the piarist order, was spoken holy. TheKárolyi family, in honour of the new saint, baptises the childwith the name Josef and decides in sign of gratefullness to build anew church to honour Saint Joseph from Kalazanc.

On the 19th of May 1769 the headstone of the new church was set. Theconstruction took 10 years. The plans were done by the Viennaisearchitect Franz Rosenstigl.

The new baroque church was blessed on the 2nd of August 1779 fromcount Eszterházy Károly, bishop from Eger.

The earthquake from 1834 has damaged the church, its beautiful, bigtower collapsed. On its place was built the tower of today, lower, butsuitable to the whole building. The project and the leadership of therestoration works belonged to Ybl Miklós, the costs of 40000forint were taken by count Károlyi György. The lastexterior reparation of the church was done in 1964, the last interiorone in 1987.

The dimensions of the church are monumental. 46.5m length, 18.5mwidth, maximal interior height 20.5, maximal exterior height 25m. Inthe interior architecture baroque and renaissance elements mix. Thechurch is divided by six vaults. On the middle two, which are strongerthan the other, is supported the outside cupe formed nave of thechurch. One of the smallest vaults builds the sacristy, the other thechorus. Two sacristys belong to the church, with an oratorium over them.

On the walls of the church there are no paintings, although thebaroque did not exclude the use of frescoes. On the vaults there arebasoreliefs, which represent flowers. On the ceiling, the sameornament repeats. The most beautiful basorelief can be seen over themain altar, an angels group surrounded by clouds, which suggests thatalso celestial creatures are present at the mass. In the nave there isa high amvon, with fine work.

There is a main altar and eight secondary altars out of grey marmorand timber works. Almost on each altar artistic oil paintings can befound. The altar paintings date from the 80s of the 18th century andthey were done in the workshop of the artist Josef Cimbal from Vienna. On the main altar the protecting saint of the church, Saint Josephfrom Kalazanc, can be seen. The secondary altars represent theTrinity, saint Joseph, saint John Nepomuk, saint Anthony from Padua, the Hungarian saints: saint Stephan, saint Ludovic, saint Emerich, aswell as saint Andrew from Avellino.
