I tried this in B&W and it was ok but (putting aside my 'Save the Bay' hat for the moment) I like the rich olive green of the harbor water and the patina of colorful noise on the ships. That white speck may be dust on the lens or sensor or flotsam--either way, it goes before I print.

Wonderful capture, the composition is absolutely amazing; however you could play with it a little more to make it even better; for instance more sharpness would do it some good....anyway, congratulations!

Shawn, refering to the position of the sun do you mean the shadow/sun line on the right hand hull? I don't regard that as an issue--it enlivens the composition from my point of view.

The light at the top center seems a bit bright, so I'm thinking the sun was in front of you and giving some glare. I'm really undecided as to where the sun would work best for this and maybe you have already found the spot. It just seems to be a bit off to me and I can't quite say why.

Tell me what you think about this modification I made. You'll have to put it side-by-side with yours to see the difference. I darkened the highlights and sharpened the details. The ship on the left is the one that I think looks mostly better this way.

 

If you hate what what I've done let me know and I'll delete this.

It was about noon (daylight time) and the sun must have been over to the left so I guess it's just ambient harbor brightness. I wasn't acquainted with this part of town at all and shot the ships through a chain-link fence.

 

It may be what bothers you is an artifact of my crude post-processing--I lightened up the shadows between the ships a bit. I may revisit this once I get better at post-processing to see if I can tone down that highlight.

Oh, don't delete it--this is fun--and instructive! Still I have to say I don't think I want the shadows that dark and, while I like the sharpening on the hull to the right, I'm not sure about how it plays with the water.

Very interesting and provocative remark, Michael! It made me think how important those bumpers (which I think are bundles of used tires) are.

 

I'm constantly amazed by the (quite unconscious) symbolic and metaphorical power of our images.

I visited your portfolio and I picked this as my favourite. Mainly because of the symmetry of the picture. It works fine as an abstract composition. I see you have a lot of pictures taken in a port. I experienced a couple of weeks ago that a port is indeed an excellent location for original pictures.
