aepelbacher 0 Posted October 28, 2007 This is a crop from a very wide-angle view ... I sort of created a "pseudo-pano" here. The guesthouse where we stayed in Nairobi was on this dirt alley. The gate to exit the guesthouse's campus opened to give us this view. We were pretty sure that the people who owned/ran these kiosks were sleeping there as well. Notice the rooster near the left. A very confused rooster. He would start crowing outside our window around 3 or 4 o'clock a.m. every morning. Loud! It was very interesting.... Link to comment
mvisionphotography 1 Posted October 28, 2007 I feel you could almost crop by the sprite sign and get it out of the LONG picture form Since there is no color or people there no need to have it there. Also can you lower the midtones a bit for the white sky? I think this is an EXCELLENT picture with GREAT potential and loved it tremendously and would love to see it really work for you. :) Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted October 28, 2007 A very nice Street Shot and I noticed the rooster before you pointed him out. As a child I lived in an area where the chickens would get out and walk the streets. I sometimes miss being a country boy. I love this image you've provided for us of the rural Nairobi. Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted October 28, 2007 Shawn - the interesting thing about this photo is that it is not at all, in any way, shape or form, rural. It is, in fact, one of the very most urban parts of Nairobi!! See the buildings in the background approximately above where the rooster is? In Nairobi there are paved highways (about 50 feet to the right of what you can see here) with ridiculous traffic congestion, dirt roads that are accessible by motor vehicles (like this), and dirt alleys that are only accessible by foot or bicycle. You'd have to drive a half hour or 45 minutes from here to even begin to see anything remotely resembling "rural". Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted October 29, 2007 Micki, how does this look? I wasn't sure how to "do" the sky, but I changed the crop, ditched the pano look, and played a bit with the levels. You're the post-processing guru ... any more suggestions would be very welcome. Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted October 29, 2007 Shawn - this is the view to the right of the image. Does it look a bit more urban to you now? Link to comment
raddatzphoto 0 Posted October 29, 2007 I love the way the road dirt creeps up into the daily existence. Sweet shot. Link to comment
bradkim 8 Posted October 30, 2007 This is great, Lou Ann! You did an excellent job from the original capture to this posted image. The horizontal crop was a critical decision for this great result! And everybody should view this photo in LARGER version. That is a must to appreciate this image. The color adjustment in PS has been done great also! This photo stirs up some nostalgia in me.... makes me think of those youthful years of my life spent in Africa. Link to comment
joanbn 0 Posted November 2, 2007 Interesting photo. I love the story that this type of photo tells us. I like the way you treated it below, per Micki F, as it is easier to view. I also like the full view which shows more of what it is really like. Great shot! Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted November 2, 2007 Lou Ann. it is a very authentic Nairobi street that I rememnber, the rooster is part of it ;-)) all your versions are a very good documentation of the life of many of its inhabitants! Link to comment
LindaM 2 Posted November 2, 2007 i like the original crop and the adjusted color. the long crop makes me feel like i am strolling along this road! Link to comment
katzpjs 50 Posted November 3, 2007 Okay it may be urban but this country boy chooses to see it as rural. Thanks for the additional view it helps to show your thinking in how you chose to capture the aspects of the scene that you wanted to show. Link to comment
markonestudios 4 Posted September 2, 2008 Lou Ann, this was in Westlands! Kewl shot ;) Link to comment
aepelbacher 0 Posted September 2, 2008 I'm glad you know the place, Mark - there is a guesthouse immediately across the street (where I was standing to take the photo) where we stayed while in Nairobi. It is run by an order of nuns who have an orphanage in the outskirts of the city. Link to comment
