This has everything going for it and should be ranked higher in my opinion, theres some great work on here and this is certainly up there with the best .. excellent shadow and highlight detail .. nicely controlled exposure and a great comp, with stunning lead in lines and bags of texture ... all in all one of my fav shots in recent weeks.

Very eye-catching, Mehmet! Great image! You showed to photonetters that there could be limitless different ways to see the sand dunes at Mesquite Flat....

The colors and patterns make for a very attractive image. I'm struck at the difference that little shrub on the right makes in this photo.

I thought about cloning out the shrub, but had not done so. I don't know why, but I sort of like its thin long shadows more than itself... during shooting, I almost always trying to avoid shrubs, and when I include them in the composition, I do so, thinking they will be clonned out.

 

What one sees and experiences in location are not necessarily reflected in the photographs. IMHO, photographs exist in their own reality. Not all great scenes avail themselves into great photographs. And some really boring shots can turn into very fresh and exiting photographs.

 

I think there are always several images within a single photograph, and they can be brought out by primarily cropping and cloning. Each image may have a different feeling and a different audience.

Mehmet, I have photographed for many years in Death Valley and have been in these dunes and dunes in many other places and never seen a formation like this. I have also never seen such an isolated dune anywhere--generally dunes roll from one into another, separated by valleys, but never in such an isolated way. Also,it is so thin and upright that it feels much more like a photoshop creation than a natural formation--does sand have that kind of adhesion characteristics--never in my experience?!?

 

You have some wonderful photography and I really don't mind embellishments in post, but this one just doesn't feel right.

My response will be most predictable.

 

As I pronounced many times, I edit almost all my pictures using PS. This image is no different, but perhaps it is not manipulated the way you imagine.

The peak, the shrub and the goose bumps are all real. In fact this very peak has been the highest peak at this location in my last two visits. As you start the climb, view from valley up is very close to the view seen here. I'm not saying this is what my camera captured, but this is what I saw.

 

A picture not worth seeing is not worth taking either.

 

 

 

I'm by no means a sensationalist, but I must admit, I don't value what camera captures as highly as some do. I hope you'll forgive me, when I rely on my vision for embellishments. They are not to attract more attention, but really to make pictures worth seeing.

 

 

I think that your statement "I'm not saying this is what my camera captured, but this is what I saw." is believable, but not the dune.
