gdanmitchell 0 Posted October 19, 2007 Dan, it is a tough subject to shoot, given that we've seen so many images of rippling sand on dunes. That said, there is a lot to like in your take on this. The foreground ripples and the curve of the closer ridge lead the eye right to the bright arc at the top of the dune, which is placed in a virtually perfect classical "rule of thirds" position in the upper right portion of the frame. The darker sky (red filter?) sets this lighter area, yet still manages to contrast with the upper edge of the dune. (It is interesting to me to notice that the sky is darker than the top of the dune at the right; but it fades to lighter than the top of the dune at the left.) The square format works well for me. Take care, Dan Link to comment
sÃbastien simonot 0 Posted October 19, 2007 Hey Dan,Beautiful light on the dune. It's a very graphic picture and the square frame suits it perfectly.regards Link to comment
danbliss 0 Posted October 19, 2007 Dan and Sebastien, thank you for kind comments. I was trying to go for a minimal image here. I thought the curves and textures were interesting. For what it is worth, the texture is more interesting in the larger version. I was intentionally trying to work with subtleties. Maybe it just isn't strong enough. I don't know. Sometimes posting on PN is a way to think out loud. There is, in effect, a red filter. I shoot in color, but the black and white projection that I used strongly preferred reds. As far as the fading, the morning light was coming from the left, an effect that I "encouraged" with some burning. In any case, thank you very much for comments. They are greatly appreciated. jannabin 0 Posted October 19, 2007 You have cropped off the bug :). Although I miss the mystic light, the surreal surroundings of the other photo. Don't get me wrong, this is beautifull!! I love the sand structures and the lining on top of the dune. You've also darkned the picture, which I think is a good thing. Tough choice. Thanks for sharing. Link to comment

lonebearimages 0 Posted November 23, 2009 This is a very artistic image, and perfectly processed. In this case, the empty, bald sky really works well here; it really keeps the viewer's interest on the textures of the dune's surface. The square format suits the composition to a T. Well done, Dan! Cheers! Chris Link to comment
danielkongos 0 Posted May 24, 2010 Incredible as well. Why have I not come across you on photo.net? I need to explore more I guess because I can't believe I've missed these. The pictures are great of course but you also have perfect black and white conversions…really tasteful. Link to comment
