It was early morning and an overcast day and spring runoff was at it's

maximum due to all the melting snow from a long winter. The base of

the falls and the surrounding area is usually flooded due to the shear

volume of the runoff. As with all waterfall images taken under these

conditions without a very long lens, you're are going to get wet. This

is compounded when you are using a 4x5 camera because of the long

setup time required. After setting up and metering the scene and

wiping off my lens and camera for the tenth time I finally made my

exposure. I retreated from the scene dragging all my wet equipment

until I was far enough to be out from under the mist thrown off from

the falls. Yes a lot of work went into this image and it was cold to

boot. That's what I remember most about this photograph. Was it worth

it; you be the judge. What I wanted to capture was the motion of the

water, the mist, and the overall feeling that this wonder portrays.

The slow shutter speed showed the movement and the proper processing

allow the mist to stand out. Too dark and the mist disappears; too

light and the rock faces lose their volume and contrast. Even a simple

image as this can be made or broken with contrast and brightness.

Several curves adjustment layers and a toning with Ektalure Cream and

selenium.

Leo, Absolutely superb. All your work was worth it. I absolutely love your work! I stopped by your portfolio, and was extremely impressed. Your entire portfolio is impressive and I am particulary fond of your B&W. It is images such as yours that inspire me to continue to learn. Thank you for sharing. Sherida.

I'm sure Ansel's spirit was there, when you shoot that waterfall.

Thanks for posting it, a wonderful BW capture, very good contrast and tonality, lots of detail there...

Best,

Jose
