The Storr is a rocky hill on the Trotternish peninsula of the Isle

of Skye. The hill presents a steep rocky eastern face overlooking

the Sound of Raasay, contrasting with gentler grassy slopes to the

west. The Storr is prime example of the Trotternish landslip, the

longest such feature in Great Britain. The area in front of the

cliffs of The Storr is known as The Sanctuary. This has a number of

weirdly shaped rock pinnacles, the remains of ancient volcanic

plugs. One of the most famous of these is known as The Old Man of

Storr. I took this picture last weekend, on my recent trip to this

lovely place. The morning was simply amazing. I was there with my

friend and we took off about 3:30 in the morning - just to get to

the top well before the sunrise, and have some time to find a proper

spot. This place is such an amazing, almost lunar, landscape so the

possibilities are almost endless. When we reached the top we

encountered virtually four seasons there (cold wind, heavy rain,

hail - but, what's important - amazing light). There was nothing but

pure magic happening in the sky. I took this photo right after the

first rays of light started to illuminate the mountain slopes and

that amazing red colour was still visible in the sky. Please have a

look at a larger version ! Your comments/critiques much appreciated.

My grandparents came from the Isle of Skye, I went back a few years ago and now I know why they came to Australia :-) This is simply a beautiful shot!

David - I'm married too :) It's just a matter of few compromises and good time management :) In the summer time in Scotland you get up very early, climb the mountain, shoot some photos and you can be back home for some breakfast ;) Everyone's happy :)

Phil - spectacular place - of course if it's not raining :)

Jim - thank you for your comment.

And again we have a whole spectrum of ratings here. Wish to know someday what's wrong with the photo quality. Heh

Piotr, I think this picture is fantastic!! Beautiful composition...perfect in my opinion...everything is just right...light, colors and place!! Ratings here are crazy...so many of my pictures are rated down so that they won't make to any pages... honestly I really don't care about ratings but comments from another photographr really matters a lot...good or bad it does not matter!!! 7/7 from me... excellent job again!!! regards, Rajeev.

Firstly - apologies for my absence over the last few months. This is really excellent - I like the high vantage point and the fact that you have captured the hills beyond the Old Man. If I was being fussy, I'd say that the red band of cloud along the top, whilst dramatic, takes away from what would have been lovely blue colours - perhaps it draws the eye too much rather than the real subject? That's fussy though - hence 7/7! Cheers. Michael.
