Try bumping up the contrast and playing with the lights in a whole different way. The world will open up to you. You wanted opinions and I know I like it when people give them to me. I miss the contrast in this. I am an artist and I draw. Everything here seems to be the same. The whole face is the same. I did a very quick example as you see above of where I bumped up the contrast of the black and white and then put the pen back on it. Then I have the shadows covered and the spot on the checks are left with a space. I have darkness where it should be. Of course mine is extreme and not even where I would want it. The hair that is wispy is gone and I would have kept that by selecting it back in but that would have taken time. I would have also not inked the background (probably). The picture itself is just priceless and is pure gold even like this. Just wanted to give you an artists eye.

The only things I did was change to darker contast and PEN that was it ~ no other manipulation. I would still do softer cotrast and probably do glow a bit :)

Wow, thank you Micki, I really like what you did, very neat! Geez... I love getting wonderful feedback like yours. Just what I want :) So... I will go back to the drawing board, so to speak, & try what you have suggested. Saving the wispy hair will be a challenge, but I do think it makes the image more interesting. So.... since it is white, I am thinking I can actually draw it in black in a separate layer & add it back in once the contrast is bumped up.

I really thank you for taking the time to give me some sound, artistic advice. I love it!

The strangest thing, everytime I bump up the contrast & then flatten the layer, the image returns to the original. This is so......strange. I've saved it in jpeg, tiff & PS they all do the same thing, return the image to the original. I must be doing something wrong, but I'll be darned it I know what :(

Let me try again.

ok, Here is what you have to think about. You are going way over the top. When you are trying to go CONTRASTED with the B&W throw a tiny bit of yellow in it at first (remember you can always make it B&W again or sepia or whatever later). This will help with saturation and help you get the areas darker or whatever before using filters. Enlarge the picture if needed. I do this when someone gives me a picture. Like yours I enlarged it to work with.

Then Play with it back and forth to get the lines just right. THe nose just dark enough and the eyes just right.

This is Don't let those cheeks go dark again. Then you use the filters. I go into maybe a SLIGHT oil if I have to or some other slight filter that will help utilize the Chalking or the pencil. It helps make them smoother. It all depends on the picture. I do these for other people but don't post people's picture (small town here). I only post my and my kids stuff but you can look at some of them.

What PS do you have. I can suggest some REALLY cheap stuff that has some really good added functions besides using something like ELEMENTS (which I also use). I have a couple that I have downloaded that I only use ONE filter of.

I am trying to do the colorization like you are doing on your B&W stuff and am not as good as you yet!! LOL :) It all takes trial and error.

Thanks Micki. I use PSCS2. For some reason it just will not let me lighten it. I believe I will have to use other plug-ins that I have for PS &/or move it over to Painter IX.5. I love the coloration version, very warm.

I'm going to print these out tomorrow along with a ton of images I took this weekend of our oldest grandson, Jake's, football game.

I did play with this in Painter & used a few plug-ins I have. Here's another version. See what you think :) It still seems a little blotchy on her face. I'll have to work on this!

I love it!! See you softened it up and made it look wonderful!!

In my opinion much better than just the crosses in the face. It now has contrast at light on her face. Yours is much better than my darker contrast one I did quickly! YEAH!! ;)

Wonderfu!!

See, You are SOOOOOOO talented and I am so impressed with what you can do. Your world opens so wide when you start doing things like this. I just sketched in color a picture of a couple on a beach in chalk (from someone elses picture) using some of your ideas. I adore you. ~ Glad I could help you!! ;)~ micki

Download a silly CHEAP program called PAINT.NET (if you haven't). It has Three onderful filters. Other than that it is CRAP! It is free and no harm will come to your computer. It has a portrait softner which prepares things really well for doing things like this. Then it has a great ink (for things like this) and a great PENCIL. It also has a great slider for different strengths which I love. Other than that, like I said CRAP :)

Thanks Micki. I have sent the new version to be printed on Art paper. I had one printed last week of Ethan & it turned out so beautifully. I hope this one does the same. Thank you for all the help. I will download the little program. It sounds right up my alley :)

When I looked at your original, my first thought was, I didn't like it to much, it was to harsh. I was going to say try a softer look. Well, you did, your last image is very nice. You are very good w\PS.

It always gives me a positive feeling when someone, somewhere out there in the world is willing to share their knowledge & help someone also out there somewhere in this huge world, improve their skills, leading to a better representation of what they originally had in mind. All this for free :) Thanks again Micki. I just can't wait to see the printed image you helped me achieve :) I am smiling! I will definitely let you know how it turns out on paper. As I said before, I had it printed on Art paper, so I am expecting good things :)

now your going to have to tell me ALL the silly programs you have so I can invest. HA!

Isn't that silly. I end up haing all these silly BIG programs and still go backc to the $30 program that is easy to use and I love.

Hey can you look at a chalking I did? Raters don't like chalkings :( They think it is blurry and rate fast.

Just a simple one but I'm trying a new technique and it is actually one I can post. I don't get to post hardly any of my stuff and I'm about to try this technique on a soccer pic of my son (hopefully if there are no other kids around). But I just did this one and could post it.

Under the TreeThanks ;) No rate ~ just comment ;)

I got this one back on Friday from the printer. The new version turned out so well. I am very pleased. Thank you again for the assist. I looked at your chalk drawing & commented. I love to see people's interpretations of what they saw :)
