Alon, I came back for a second look maybe because it's so close to Israel's birthday and this reminds me of how I felt there when I was most at peace. I told you I spent a summer there as a teen, but I fell so deeply in love with your country, that I later lived there for a few years--first kibbutz, then Jerusalem--so much of my waking hours in the bunkers of Har Hatsofim. I know this lighting so well, (I can imagine so many scenes like this in my mind) which means there's the luxury of trees and the ubiquitous arch over the door, the blue to keep out evil spirits (I don't think it works) and remember many days spent with friends in the German Colony, Rehavia (where I was lucky enough to live my last year), Beit HaKerem-- all older neighborhoods that felt like this--this indescribable beauty that can't be reproduced. My feelings towards living or not living in Israel remain ambivalent, but my support,and more than that, my awe of what you all have done to build this place is unwavering, and when I read an article even this evening of the British having tried to get away with sending the Jews on Exodus ship to German DP camps, I'm astounded time and again. What would we do without Israel in this world --a world that we know over and over again goes into anti-Semitic craziness.

I hope you have a joyful celebration. I wish you and all in the region soooo much peace. I can't think of a more beautiful place on earth (of course, Paris is fun--but a playground). From an American Jew to an Israeli, thank you for what you do.
