How was the effect created? The shutter speed was 1/4 of a second at ISO 200, F22 with my 24-105 at 65mm pointed almost strait down. I knew thet F22 would create a diffraction of light which appears as a sort of 'star' effect on the highlights. I also knew the very misty, salty sea air had coated the front of my glass just a little bit, which further diffused the effect and added a percieved softness to the scene (allthough it is very sharp). The hardest part was capturing the wave action excatly right. It took about 100 attempts to record the wave action you see here, just a minute or two before the sun disappeared.

24-105 L at 65mm, 1/4 sec. at F22, ISO 200, no filters.

Hi Marc!

Very nice lights play, as you explain about the shot you know how to get the most of your camera and lenses.

My best regards.

I really like images that capture an essence, as you have done here, and I appreciate the explanation that you provided on how it was done.

Marc,

This is really something special...both graphical and personal. This image is a marker of your growth. You've taken grand landscapes to the limit and beyond, so that is under your belt. Now, with this image...it is apparent that you are hot on the trail of mastering emotional intimates inserted with your very own style.

I'd say you are world renowned amongst us photo geeks, but inching closer to that public spotlight. Just a couple words...THINK BIG my friend and you will be there soon enough.

Marc,

Again, I want to commend your creativity in technique as well as your persistence and effort to get the very best image. You mentioned somewhere in your bio that you stop at nothing to capture the beauty you see at its best, and I truly believe that. I don't think too many other photographers have the patience or will to make 100 attempts at this shot. So congrats, as usual.

I love your work so much and gets so biased when I see image shot by you, that I find hard to agree sometimes what I really feel. And this is one such example. I like the waves and the stars effect you could bring out, but this really confuses me, probably the angle I am not sure this is shot with? As a viewer I am confused where the water is coming from and tend to not sure what this is about, until I read the title. Just an honest opinion.

Lalit, there is no way this image could work if you saw where the water was coming from. The beauty of it is there is much left to the imagination. It has to be that way for the image to succeed. This is an intimate image. You focus on the immediate here, as not everything is given away. It's intentionally more abstract than my landscape work, but I think it's pretty obvious that it is a depiction of waves crashing on rocks. That's all you need to know. I wouldn't try to look into it like I would a landscape image. It's one of my favorite images I've made this year.

Certainly. Thanx for the response. I love the abstracts much and exactly I tried to cleanse the landscape ideas. I think the angle , the plane of the rocks and waves is what confused me e.g. should I consider this plane vertical or flat on the ground? I will revisit this without prior thoughts. It is nice to find a different images from your, your proxy falls picture with and without rainbow is still my favorite, thats when I first realized your extraordinary work. Obviously your work is very inspiring and always something learn from or think about and I must be thinking too much ;-)

I understand why this is one of your favourites from this year - now it's one of MY favourites too. The technique and endurance you show here is remarkable.

Keep it up ... Andreas.

Excellent idea and perfect shot. I thought 20 or 30 shots of the same image was excessive. 100......I guess next time I won't give up so easily.
