David,

Soon after I became a PN member, I discovered your work; and soon after that, after I added you to my "interesting" list, I began to appreciate the range of your art.

Sometimes, in a piece like "S-H-Y", you create images of strong composition and color that would suit the slick spaces of a fashion magazine; some, like "Mrs. Bond meets Goldfinger", your humor becomes Pan-like, as you revel in tweating the nose of propriety; and in some, like "No Caption Required", there is the charm of the artist who lets the beauty of his subject shine through without artifice. And the common thread throughout all these works is the extreme craftsmanship that corroborates with vision to create works of technical clarity.

This work falls into none of the above categories. It is deception in the guise of pixels of chromality, a blurred image of captured reality, and an abstraction that stands on the strength of its simplicity.

I saw this; I rated it; I left.

I came back; I saw what I hadn't seen before; I stayed.

For I saw what I feel is the weakness of the image. And it has nothing to do with focus or DoF; or composition; or any of the hundred other canons by which we judge an image.

For the weakness of the image is in scale, for the image on the computer screen lacks the gut-check force of being confronted by such an image a hundred-fold larger than what shines out of the screens before us.

Picture this image 12 feet wide, and 8 feet high, hanging alone on the Siberian walls of an Uptown gallery; picture this image that way, and you will understand why I have changed my rating to a 7/6. (For in my mind it is 12' x 8').

Owen, You can ask anything you like but I do feel that in this particular case you might not need to ask anything. I did intend to retake this when I was sober. It didn't happen!

Glenwood, I certainly don't deserve the time you have given me for this particular image. I do appreciate your input. I just wish I could give you a worthy reply.

I think I'm going to go along with Owen on this one, David. Although I think I know what I'm looking at, I'd probably like it better if I was certain.

It's an interesting shot, and follows along the lines of a couple of other images of yours, I think.
