This is one of my personal favorite photos. I've shot tens of thousands of sailing photos

now, and need to keep working at being creative. Last weekend I rediscovered the potential

of my 17-40 zoom. This is shot at 17mm on a full-frame camera--so that ship is getting

VERY close. So close, in fact, that the powerboat I was shooting from rubbed along her hull

as she went by. I'll have to be more cautious when I'm looking through that lens! The

apparent distance is very deceiving. But anyway, it was exciting getting that perspective on

such a beautiful vessel.

I am no marine specialist so I am sure that rusty sail color is probably very cool in the acquired tasteof older yatch owner or club members. But from my layman perspective however, I'd say that this picture is great in its dynamism and that the reflection of the hull is what' s very attractive with the chain tie and the prominent bar in front. Shapes is the name of the game so I took the freedom to convert it into B&W to see. I like it better I think. It's a great shot though and I imagine how close you must have been with a 17 mm. This is crazy actually. The lens flare is just fine by me, it adds realism. (I wish we could see the right wave but I understand you had to crop your own boat out)

Great capture of the sailing ship! Effective angle.

I like the square crop that a previous poster shared. One other thought - if you cropped horizontally, I could see keeping a bit more of the area behind the ship in the frame as well.

Have you tried to reduce that large flare spot over the water at lower left?

Take care,

Dan

Great comments, thank you everyone.

I definitely like the B&W conversion. I'll have to do one myself!

As to the flare, it wasn't intentional, of course. I may try to minimize its appearance. It might not have been a problem in the first place if I still had the hood for that lens. It accidentally twisted off and went overboard a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately they don't float!
