dangoldman 0 Posted August 9, 2007 Awesome shot neil! I like how well you have captured the water moving over the board, as well as her facial expresion as she tries to stay on top of it. With the slight definition of the front of the board, i can almost sense its acceleration. This coming winter i will be shooting some surfing of the guys i sail/race with and i will probably use my 400mm lens for it. Im curious to know if this lens is long enough to reach without cropping (though obviously all beaches are different where the waves are, but a rough estimation is welcome)? I ask because this lens only fits my film camera, and i'd rather not crop film. Link to comment
namurray 0 Posted August 9, 2007 Hello Dan, Thanks very much for your comments. I was using a 400 prime lens fitted with a 1.4 extender. On the Canon 1D MkIIN at 1.3 cropping factor that gave an effective focal length of about 670mm. I think that's right. Even then I cropped the shot a bit. Original was 3500x2300 and I cropped to 2500x2000. If you can get close enough with the 400mm prime, the clarity and sharpness is much better. A couple of years ago, I shot a couple of days surfing with my Nikon 90X film camera with a zoom lens at 300mm. It was the Rip Curl Pro, usually held at Bell's Beach but shifted to Woolamai near where I live. Despite only having 300mm I managed to get some real good shots when they surfed the close-in shore breaks. Good luck, Neil Link to comment
dangoldman 0 Posted August 10, 2007 Thanks for the info, Neil. Looks like i may invest in a cheap teleconverter (the non cannon converters for the FD mount are nearly free on KEH). Link to comment
