I see how you avoided the busy background in this image. I too have tried many ways of trying to isolate the subject from the busy background. Good job. The POW WOW events are really alot of fun to attend and even more fun to try to capture.

Thanks for commenting. The Pow Wow building here has a great design, the spectators sit in shadow while the performers are in the sun light. This dancer had dark shadow behind her, there were a few seats visible, easily burned out. Best regards,

Linda

simply beautiful Linda! i have an observation and a question...not a criticism. i realilze the dancer is of course...in motion. her face is not in sharp focus...so my question is this: is the lack of sharpness to softly show a bit of motion? or...just a bit of a slow shutter speed? either way... i still love the photo. just curious, and didn't want to sound judgmental...even though the photo is up for critique. my best to you... john

Hi John!

Thanks for commenting and for the question. I think it was just my inability to hold the camera dead still. There was a lot of jostling going on among the spectators and other photographers. I believe a tripod would have been helpful, but it was just too crowded. I tried to steady my camera by leaning on a beam, but I realize that there is a bit of motion there. I was happy just to be able to capture her in the regalia in graceful movement. Thanks again.

Best regards,

Linda

thanks Linda...trying to be helpful...perhaps a little faster shutter speed would have taken care of it. if you have the metadata perhaps you can see where your s/speed was set and it'll help in the future. i'm always a bit hesitant to offer suggestions...as some get offended, but felt you'd be receptive...as you're always so sweet spirited! best to you, john

John,

Thanks! You are right! The obvious always eludes me. I think I can check that out. I always appreciate good advice.

I like the photo very much. You isolated the dancer with the dark background, and color always looks better contrasting with black. I think the slight movement gives motion and life to the photo especially the fringe. I do not think you need the face to be any sharper. Its a very well done photo that gives movement to the subject. These are tough situations to shoot and you did a good job.

Michael,

Thank you very much, I appreciate it. I was a real trooper on that day, down on my knees in the mud. I was glad that I got the images I did.

I'm glad Mr.Ging weighed in...his skills and judgment far outweigh mine. i agree with his assessment that there's enough focus on the face...my question/comment was as much for my own personal education...actually more, than attempting to teach you Linda! :)

Thank you! I am glad to hear you like this one. This was taken at the Kamloopa Pow Wow. It is one of the largest celebrations of First Nations' culture and heritage in Western Canada. The Pow Wow is a spectacular expression of the Secwepemc people's heritage and is a vibrant display of storytelling, song, and dance in traditional costumes.
