This is my second portfolio shot from Moraine Lake, near Lake

Louise, Alberta. I'll gladly provide a return critique in exchange

for yours. Cheers, Scott.

I really like the angle this is shot at, gives it such a majestic feel.which I'm sure it has in person :)

Nice landscape and perspective. The only imperfection is the blurry mountain in the background. I wish it was sharper. BTW, I just read your critique request!! This shouldn't be a trade. We just rate/critique the photos we like.

I really like the perspective up the river with the mountains in the background. I think this is a strong composition. But, I find the image a little bit too busy for my tastes. I think part of that is the variety of colours here -- particularly the blues of the shadow area on the peaks.

Given my affection for the basic structure of the composition, I wanted to see what this would be like as a B&W so I did a quick conversion from your posting (I hope you don't mind). I have attached it so that you can see some of my thinking on this image and the composition. I converted to B&W, toned it lightly and did a large-radius unsharp-mask (to try and crisp up the peaks as per the previous poster's comment).

Thanks, Ian, for experimenting with this one. I agree with your comments... it is a busy shot. I would have preferred to have gotten in the stream, so that the stream wouldn't be exiting the frame in the corner, and that would also have allowed me to eliminate some of the rockfall on the left. I wasn't equipped to get wet, unfortunately, so I went with this angle. Your black and white version is an interesting experiment. When I see it, I wish that there had been more haze, just to push the mountains further into the distance, and give it a more romantic feel. I hadn't considered going with B&W on this, mostly because I liked the color hilights in the foreground rocks. I'll have to think of B&W treatments in the future, just to see if they make for a better result. Cheers, Scott.
