What a town eh? In Illinois they pronounce it KAY-ro. Like the syrup. That looks like a good place to stay out of.

This is marvelous! Nature works it way back to dominance.

 

I do wonder though that on a larger scale whether we have forever altered the playing field.

I argued with my wife all the way from St. Louis about that pronunciation. I don't know how I knew it, but I did. She is now changing it from Kiro to Care o. So there is some improvement.

 

I take it you have been there??? What a place if you are into wrack and ruin. I could not believe what I saw.

 

I alos made the mistake of needing a place to stay there, as we got in late in the day. I won't make that mistake again. Cheers

I think you are quite right. Nature no longer has a chance against man. But then, I suppose one could argue that man is just a part of nature. I know I have a particularly harsh view of mankind, but I have come to see us as nothing more than a virus on the host planet. And, just like a virus, we will overcome our host, and it will die. And, when it does, so, too, will we. I'm not convvinced it had to be that way. Only convinced that it will be. Peace, my friend.

Yeah Dave, I don't remember ever being downtown there, but I probably was. What a neat place for people to see on entering the prairie state. I hope you didn't get the wrong idea about the rest of us.

OH MY GOD!!! Look at the plant life filling that upper window! I would be interested in seeing the inside, but I doubt that I'd go into the place: Little Shop of Horrors!

I can only hope that this is not typical for the state. Actually, I know it is not, as I have been to Illinois several times over my lifetime. Chicago is a great city. I have seen big city slums, but I have never seen anything quite like Cairo. What an unimaginable downturn.

Without meaning anything personal to its inhabitants, the whole place is a little town of horrors. I, too, would like to see the inside. Many, many buildings had doors wide open or windows open, etc. and could be entered pretty freely by the bold, but this one appeared fairly well secured. It is creepy.

I thought if anyone would appreciate this one, it would be you. Yes, those signs were pasted all over this abandoned town, and I even found one on a window where someone had written right before it the word "Don't". I am thinking about taking that and combining it with the other and making a little collage. How could you not vote for preacher I ask?

i saw many places similar to this on my drive to and from Michigan. unfortunately, i had limited time and my husband who has little patience was driving, so we drove past them. the thing i find so disturbing is that we have left all of these marvelous downtowns, destroyed the individual business owners, in favor of cookie cutter strip malls filled with indiscriminate chain stores. our kids wear uniforms to school and are taught to standardized tests. wow, i'm depressing myself here. on a more positive note, i can look at the life inside this building as a creative force ready to break out.

It's too bad you did not have the luxury of time to stop and photograph. While you have found many great subjects right in your own back yard, it certainly would have given you some new material. Life does not always make our goals easy to attain, but, then I suppose goals wouldn't be of value if they were easily attained. I am sure you would have had a ball in Cairo, Illinois. You must go there for a day or two of shooting. Cheers
