Superb capture, Micki. A delight of b&w scene with excellent light, sharpness and contrast. The atmosphere is unique. Best regards!

Not only is this a great action shot... But the tones... The tones are amazing!

Great detail from black to white.

So the dog did get the ball! Just one nitpick critique on this one - put a border on it otherwise the ball will leave the frame. hehehehe

I wasn't sure as I sometimes think I go a bit overboard because I forget and go towards the old "PRINT" style that we go for when you have to do it for printing in say a newsletter. Silly dogs face being white is hard.

I did move the ball down and IF that ball goes out of that picture I'll just move it back. LOL

I did try it with a frame and it looked stupid for some reason. SO I would have put a white frame around it with a dark line so I figured it was still just a normal picture so I left it alone.

It is just a picture taken by me and his dog. Still working on the silly dog and my them playing. Silly them. My son always says "OK, time for pictures mom". :) ~ I LOVE IT!!

Micki, this photo is wonderful. The composition, the action, the life you've captured is super. The way the three subjects (ball, boy, dog) are aligned is terrific. The lighting and textures add a lot of life. Technically, though, it's lacking depth and feels very flat. Part of that is the camera, the way your son's head against the roof of the house almost seems like a cutout shows the flaws of the camera. But I think some work in photoshop would give this photo a lot more depth and 3-dimensionality. That's why a lot of photographers encourage people to take drawing or painting classes. The main problem for me is the consistency of the light, so that as we head toward the far part of the house, it doesn't really feel like it's getting further away. Some dropping off of the light would help that a lot. Also some variety of light on the lit part of the grass in the foreground and the shrub between boy and ball would make for a more interesting visual experience. I think the emotional and storytelling part of this photo is all there, but it needs more technical substance to support it.

HA... AND get them to play the other way and move my two trees HA

I know the house in the back is in the wrong place. I figure I am still just trying to learn how to capture the three items in the same frame (somewhat) but I am at least getting better at that.

What I really need to do is just get over my "PANIC" feelings and pick up ANDREWS camera and work with it for these shots. My camera just doesn't cut it. I realized that with the soccer pictures. I can do "hobby and so so pictures" but I can't get the 3D feel that I want. My flower bush's in the back just look awful and the yucky stuff in the back just look yucky. My camera "STINKS" at anything outside unless it is a sunset. Unless it is five feet in front of you.

Point and shoot. YEP that is why they call them that.

This picture would be fine if I was printing it abot 4x4 but that is it. Great for Grandma (hi mom).

But, I did get the shadow in front of them (YEAH) which is what I was going for. That is the only thing I like about the picture (my critique) that I got the forward motion and the three in the picture frame (HA). AND no birds!! he he

Thanks FRED... Please keep it honest. I personally am just glad I'm getting a little better. But I will keep posting them as I am not proud. I'm still learning on this stuff. I hate this part but got to learn it.

by the way, I HATED this stuff in art class. HA!

I think you're partly right and partly using the camera as an excuse. You can do much better with this same shot even with the camera you have and a little photoshop work. Which is not to say you don't deserve a better instrument. Nothing about the composition itself bothers me. It all seems very natural. For me, it's all in conveying more focused light (even at this time of day), more variety of tones, and greater depth. And everything you post is worthy! Don't sell yourself short.

so ~ see how big my yard is. I don't want them in front of the fence. What I need is to get them out in a field and I am (as you said) stuck in the back yard.

Showing you what I had to work with. BUT, I will re-work it when it is daytime. (still thinking) But I wanted you to see the scope of the yard. AND how big my Azalea bush is. OMG it is huge.
